SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 16:1–24: Paul gave some final instructions

In this final section of the book, Paul wrote briefly about several topics. He wrote about collecting money for poor Christians in Jerusalem, and he wrote about the travel plans of him and his companions. Then he concluded his letter with some short exhortations, warnings, blessings, and greetings.

Here are some other possible section headings:

The conclusion of the letter

Final topics

Paragraph 16:15–18

In this paragraph Paul wrote about how Stephanas and his family had served the Corinthians, and he urged the Corinthians to appreciate what they had done. He also expressed appreciation for Stephanas and two other men who had come to visit him.

16:18a

For they refreshed my spirit and yours as well.

For: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For introduces a reason why the three men made up for the absence of the Corinthians. They encouraged Paul’s spirit with the news they brought.

they refreshed my spirit and yours as well: The clause they refreshed my spirit and yours as well indicates that these men brought rest to both Paul and the Corinthians. They encouraged and strengthened them both.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

they have raised my spirits—and no doubt yours too (REB)

they have set my mind at rest, just as they did yours (NJB)

refreshed: The Greek word that the BSB translates as refreshed is more literally “put at rest.” This is the word used in Matthew 11:28 when Jesus said, “I will give you rest.”

16:18b

Show your appreciation, therefore, to such men.

Show your appreciation, therefore, to such men: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as therefore indicates that Paul told the Corinthians to honor people like Stephanas because of their qualities that he mentioned in verse 17 and 18a. Translate this connection in a way that is natural in your language.

Here are some ways to translate this connection:

So then, recognize people like this. (NET)

Therefore acknowledge such men (NASB)

Show your appreciation: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Show…appreciation is more literally “acknowledge them.” Paul wanted the Corinthians to tell people that these men, and other people like them, were worthy of respect.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

show respect to people like this

give honor to people who do like these people do

such men: Paul referred to men who did the same good things that Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus did.

Here is another way to translate this phrase:

people who do things like these men do

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἀνέπαυσαν & τὸ ἐμὸν πνεῦμα καὶ τὸ ὑμῶν

˱they˲_refreshed & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀνέπαυσαν Γάρ τό ἐμόν πνεῦμα καί τό ὑμῶν ἐπιγινώσκετε Οὖν τούς τοιούτους)

Here, refreshed my spirit and yours refers to how these three men helped Paul and the Corinthians regain energy, strength, and confidence. In other words, they helped Paul and the Corinthians feel better and stronger. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this idiom with a comparable idiom or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [they raised my spirits and yours] or [they helped me and you rest]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὸ ἐμὸν πνεῦμα καὶ τὸ ὑμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀνέπαυσαν Γάρ τό ἐμόν πνεῦμα καί τό ὑμῶν ἐπιγινώσκετε Οὖν τούς τοιούτους)

Here, spirit is part of the idiom “refresh the spirit.”Paul assumes that his readers will understand that it refers to the spirit of the person, or their inner life, not to the Holy Spirit. If it would help your readers, you could refer just to the people instead of to their “spirits.” Alternate translation: [me and you]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

τὸ ὑμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀνέπαυσαν Γάρ τό ἐμόν πνεῦμα καί τό ὑμῶν ἐπιγινώσκετε Οὖν τούς τοιούτους)

Here Paul omits what it is that is yours. He does this because he stated it in the previous phrase (spirit). If your language would not omit spirit here, you could include it. Alternate translation: [your spirits]

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

τοὺς τοιούτους

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀνέπαυσαν Γάρ τό ἐμόν πνεῦμα καί τό ὑμῶν ἐπιγινώσκετε Οὖν τούς τοιούτους)

Here, the ones like these refers back to the three men whom Paul mentioned in the previous verse ([16:17](../16/17.md)). It also refers to anyone else who, like those men, “refreshes the spirit” of others. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express that the ones like these refers to the three men and others like them with a word or phrase that does clearly refer to these two groups. Alternate translation: [people who are like that] or [them and those such as them]
