SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 16:1–24: Paul gave some final instructions

In this final section of the book, Paul wrote briefly about several topics. He wrote about collecting money for poor Christians in Jerusalem, and he wrote about the travel plans of him and his companions. Then he concluded his letter with some short exhortations, warnings, blessings, and greetings.

Here are some other possible section headings:

The conclusion of the letter

Final topics

Paragraph 16:10–11

In this paragraph Paul wrote about his fellow worker Timothy. Timothy was traveling to Corinth, and Paul wanted to make sure that his visit there was a good one.

16:10a

If Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is with you,

If Timothy comes: Paul had already sent Timothy to Corinth (see 4:17). He hoped that Timothy would reach Corinth. However, he was not certain that this would happen or when it would be.

comes: The verb comes refers to reaching the city of Corinth. Paul himself was not in Corinth.

Here are some other ways to translate this word:

gets to you

arrives in Corinth

see to it that: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as see to it that introduces a command.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

be sure that (he has nothing to fear)

do not (make him afraid)

he has nothing to fear while he is with you: Some of the Corinthians were angry at Paul, and Timothy was Paul’s friend. Paul thought that because of this, the Corinthians might not receive Timothy in a friendly way.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

do not make him be afraid to work with you

do not threaten him

welcome him so that he won’t be afraid of you

16:10b

for he is doing the work of the Lord, just as I am.

for: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as for introduces a reason why the Corinthians should do what Paul told them.

he is doing the work of the Lord: The phrase he is doing the work of the Lord means that the work Timothy did benefited the kingdom of God. He traveled to visit the Corinthians in order to serve the Lord.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

he is doing the Lord’s work (CEV)

he is working for the Lord (GNT)

just as I am: The phrase just as I am is a short way to say “just as I also am carrying on the work of the Lord.”

16:10b-11a

he is doing the work of the Lord, just as I am. No one, then, should treat him with contempt: In some languages it may be clearer to reverse the order of these clauses.

Here is another way to translate these clauses:

No one should treat him with contempt, because he is doing the work of the Lord, just as I am

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-condition-fact

ἐὰν & ἔλθῃ Τιμόθεος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐάν Δέ ἔλθῃ Τιμόθεος βλέπετε ἵνα ἀφόβως γένηται πρός ὑμᾶς τό γάρ ἔργον Κυρίου ἐργάζεται ὡς ἐγώ)

Paul is speaking as if Timothy coming was a hypothetical possibility, but he means that it is actually true. He has already stated that he has sent Timothy to the Corinthians (See: [4:17](../04/17.md)). He uses if here to indicate that he is not sure when Timothy will arrive, not that he is unsure if Timothy will arrive at all. If your language does not state something as a condition if it is certain or true, and if your readers might think that what Paul is saying is not certain, then you could translate his words as an affirmative statement. If possible, include the idea that the time of Timothy’s arrival is uncertain. Alternate translation: [when Timothy eventually comes]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / go

ἔλθῃ

˓may˒_come

Here Paul is speaking about how Timothy will visit the Corinthians. Use a word in your language that refers to a person arriving where someone lives to visit them. Alternate translation: [visits you]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

βλέπετε ἵνα

˓be˒_seeing that

Here, see that refers to carefully doing something or making sure that something happens. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express see that with a comparable phrase. Alternate translation: [ensure that] or [be careful that]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀφόβως γένηται πρὸς ὑμᾶς

fearlessly ˱he˲_˓may˒_become (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐάν Δέ ἔλθῃ Τιμόθεος βλέπετε ἵνα ἀφόβως γένηται πρός ὑμᾶς τό γάρ ἔργον Κυρίου ἐργάζεται ὡς ἐγώ)

Here Paul implies that the Corinthians could make Timothy “afraid.” Throughout the letter, it has been clear that some of the Corinthians disagree with and even oppose Paul. Paul wants to make sure that the Corinthians do not treat Timothy badly because of his relationship with Paul. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind why Paul wants to make sure that Timothy is unafraidmore explicitly. Alternate translation: [you do not intimidate him] or [he is not afraid because of you]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τὸ & ἔργον Κυρίου ἐργάζεται

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐάν Δέ ἔλθῃ Τιμόθεος βλέπετε ἵνα ἀφόβως γένηται πρός ὑμᾶς τό γάρ ἔργον Κυρίου ἐργάζεται ὡς ἐγώ)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind work, you can express the idea by using a verb such as “work.” Alternate translation: [he is working for the Lord]
