OET (OET-RV)However, his sons will assemble a huge army and wage war. It will keep coming and overflow like a flood and pass through, and will carry the war as far as his fortress again.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:7–10

This paragraph continues to describe the conflict between the northern and the southern kingdoms.

11:10a

But his sons will stir up strife and assemble a great army,

But his sons will stir up strife: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as will stir up strife literally means “excite themselves, stir themselves up against someone.” Here are some other ways to translate this:

His sons shall wage war (NRSV)

His sons will make preparations for war

his sons: The phrase his sons refers to the sons of the northern king, the sons of the Seleucid ruler Seleucus II. There were two sons, so in some languages you may be able to use a dual form. These sons became Seleucus III and Antiochus III. Here is another way to translate this:

The sons of the king of the North (NCV)

and assemble a great army: The sons of the northern king would call up many soldiers to form a large army. Here are some other ways to translate this:

and gather a large army (GNT)

They will assemble a large number of forces

They will get a large army together (NCV)

11:10b

which will advance forcefully, sweeping through like a flood,

which will advance forcefully, sweeping through like a flood: The clause which will advance forcefully, sweeping through like a flood contains a simile. The movement of the attacking army is compared to a flood of water that overwhelms everything in its way. The point of comparison is that nothing can stand against such a force. Here are some other ways to translate this figure of speech:

11:10c

and will again carry the battle as far as his fortress.

and will again carry the battle as far as his fortress: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as carry the battle means “make war.” The army of the North will make war and advance as far as the fortress of the king of the South. Here are some other ways to translate this:

reaching all the way to the fortress of the southern kingdom (CEV)

and fight all the way to the strong, walled city of the king of the South (NCV)

and attack an enemy fortress (GNT)

his fortress: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as fortress is often translated as “stronghold.” Here it refers to a fortified city, a city protected by walls. The pronoun his refers to the king of the South, the Egyptian ruler.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ובנו יִתְגָּר֗וּ

and,sons_of,his wage_war

The expression will be stirred up is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [And his sons will stir themselves up for battle]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication

וּבָ֥א ב֖וֹא

and,it_will_go to_sweep_on

The angel is repeating forms of the verb come in order to intensify his expression of the idea that it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [And it will surely come]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְשָׁטַ֣ף וְעָבָ֑ר

and,it_will_overflow and,it_will_pass_over

Here the angel is speaking as if this army were water that would overflow the land. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and it will spread over the land and pass through]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְיָשֹׁ֥ב ויתגרו עַד־מעזה

(Some words not found in UHB: and,sons_of,his wage_war and,they_will_gather multitude_of forces great and,it_will_go to_sweep_on and,it_will_overflow and,it_will_pass_over and,it_will_return and,it_will_get_ready_for_war until stronghold_of,his )

The angel is using return and be stirred up as a common expression of the culture to mean “attack again.” If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and it will bring the war once again to his stronghold] or [it will attack again, reaching all the way to his fortress]
