OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

בֶּן־אֲבִישׁ֗וּעַ בֶּן־פִּֽינְחָס֙ בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֔ר בֶּן־אַהֲרֹ֥ן

son_of Abishua son_of Fīnəḩāş son_of ʼElˊāzār son_of ʼAhₐron

Here again, unless you have chosen to use the term “descendant” throughout this list, you can say “son” in each case here because each of these men was the actual father of the man whose name precedes his. Alternate translation: “the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron”

Note 1 topic: translate-names

אֲבִישׁ֗וּעַ & פִּֽינְחָס֙ & אֶלְעָזָ֔ר & אַהֲרֹ֥ן

Abishua & Fīnəḩāş & ʼElˊāzār & ʼAhₐron

These are the names of four men.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / distinguish

הַכֹּהֵ֖ן הָרֹֽאשׁ

the=priest/officer the,chief

Here the book provides some background information to remind readers of who Aaron was. Alternate translation: “the high priest”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הַכֹּהֵ֖ן הָרֹֽאשׁ

the=priest/officer the,chief

Here, head is a figurative way of saying “leader.” Specifically, it means that Aaron was the leader of the priests, or the high priest. Alternate translation: “the high priest”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

הַכֹּהֵ֖ן הָרֹֽאשׁ

the=priest/officer the,chief

The book assumes that readers will know that Aaron was the first high priest to serve in the tabernacle when God gave the law to Moses, his brother. Alternate translation: “the first high priest”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:1-5 Ezra highlights his standing by listing his own genealogy through Zadok, priest under Solomon (1 Kgs 2:35), all the way back to Aaron the high priest, Moses’ brother. This list is clearly abbreviated: It has only sixteen generations from Aaron to eighty years after the Exile, while 1 Chr 6:3-15 has twenty-three generations from Aaron to the Exile.
