2:17 Note: KJB: Hos.2.15

2:17 OSHB note: We agree with both BHS 1997 and BHQ on an unexpected reading.

OET (OET-RV)because I’ll remove the names of the Baals from her mouth,
⇔ and they’ll no longer be remembered by their names.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:14–23: The LORD promised to renew his covenant with them

The purpose of the punishment in 2:1–13 was to make the people of Israel realize that their worship of false gods would result in harm. In this section, 2:14–23, the LORD showed that he continued to love the people of Israel. If they worshiped him, he would bless them and not harm them. In spite of their past sins, he would reestablish a covenant with them. In this section, the tone switches from negative to positive, so there is a sharp contrast between the previous section and this one.

Here are some other examples of section headings:

Future Repentance and Restoration of Israel (NET)

The Lord’s Love for Unfaithful Israel (NLT)

Paragraph 2:16–20

Verses 16–17 describe a future time when the LORD will cause the Israelites to stop worshiping the gods they call Baals. The LORD alone will be the one they worship and serve.

In return for their devotion, he promised to protect them and their crops from wild animals and from war (verses 18–20). Compare the similar promise to the Israelites in Leviticus 26:5–6.

2:17

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

17aFor I will remove from her lips the names of the Baals;

17b no longer will their names be invoked.

This verse explains why Israel will no longer use the names of Baal to refer to her husband, the LORD. It is because the LORD will stop Israel from doing so.

The first line means that the LORD will cause Israel to stop saying the various names of Baal. The second line indicates the result of the LORD’s action. The result is that the nation of Israel will no longer use the names of Baal, especially in prayers or vows.Andersen and Freedman (page 279).

Some versions, such as the BSB, leave this reason-result relationship implied. Other versions make it explicit. For example:

For I will remove the names of the Baal idols from your lips, so that you will never again utter their names! (NET)

Express this relationship in a natural way in your language.

2:17a

For I will remove from her lips the names of the Baals;

For I will remove from her lips the names of the Baals: This is a figure of speech in which the phrase her lips (literally “her mouth,” as in the NRSV) represents the action (of speaking) performed by the mouth. The line as a whole means that the LORD will not allow the Israelites to speak the names of the Baals. For example:

I will never let her say the names of Baal again (NCV)

her lips: The Hebrew uses the pronoun her and not “your,” even though the pronoun refers to the same person here as in the previous verse. See the note on the pronoun “you” in 2:16b–c for translation advice.

Baals: The word Baals is plural. See the note on 2:13a. You should translate it the same way in both verses.

2:17a–b

(combined/reordered)

2:17b

no longer will their names be invoked.

no longer will their names be invoked: This is a passive clause. In some languages, it may be necessary to use an active clause and to make explicit a subject of the verb. For example:

people won’t use their names anymore (NCV)

General Comment on 2:17a–b

In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts. For example:

I will never let her speak the name of Baal again. (GNT)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth

(Some words not found in UHB: and,I_will_give to/for=her/it DOM vineyards_of,her from=there and=DOM valley_of ˊĀkōr to,a_door_of hope and,she_will_answer there,(to) like,the_days_of her_youth(s)_of,her and,like,the_day_of she=ascended from,the_land_of Miʦrayim/(Egypt) )

The Israelites will not speak the names of Baal and the idols again. The people are represented by their mouths. Alternate translation: “For I will cause you to not speak the names of the Baals”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:17 To avoid any possible syncretism between the Lord and Baal, God would wipe the many names of Baal from Israel’s lips.
