OET (OET-LV) [fn] and_ YHWH _he/it_said because they_have_abandoned DOM law_of_my which I_set before_them and_not they_have_listened to_voice_of_my and_not they_have_walked in_it.
9:12 Note: KJB: Jer.9.13
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
(Occurrence 0) What man is wise enough to understand this?
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in they,have_forsaken DOM law_of,my which/who I_give before,,them and=not obeyed to,voice_of,my and=not walked in,it )
Yahweh uses this rhetorical question to emphasize that only a very wise person will understand the things he has said. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “Only people who are very wise can understand these things.”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
(Occurrence 0) To whom has the mouth of Yahweh spoken, and he will declare it?
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in they,have_forsaken DOM law_of,my which/who I_give before,,them and=not obeyed to,voice_of,my and=not walked in,it )
Yahweh uses this rhetorical question to emphasize that only the people he has spoken to can declare these things. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “Only those who have been taught by Yahweh can explain these things to others.”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche
(Occurrence 0) the mouth of Yahweh
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in they,have_forsaken DOM law_of,my which/who I_give before,,them and=not obeyed to,voice_of,my and=not walked in,it )
Here Yahweh’s speech is represented by his “mouth.” Alternate translation: “Yahweh”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
(Occurrence 0) Why has the land perished and been destroyed … pass through?
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in they,have_forsaken DOM law_of,my which/who I_give before,,them and=not obeyed to,voice_of,my and=not walked in,it )
Yahweh uses this rhetorical question to emphasize that only a wise person could explain why the land has been destroyed. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “Only a wise person could explain why the land has perished and been destroyed … pass through.”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
(Occurrence 0) has the land perished and been destroyed
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in they,have_forsaken DOM law_of,my which/who I_give before,,them and=not obeyed to,voice_of,my and=not walked in,it )
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Both “perished” and “been ruined” describe the land being ruined. Alternate translation: “is the land ruined” (See also: figs-doublet)
9:12 It is unclear who asks these three questions. It might be the people or Jeremiah. The first two questions express frustration that the Lord’s message about the religious and political situation made no sense—the Lord’s words seemed too harsh and too extreme. The third question reveals anger that the land had been desolated. The questioner seems to ask where to find the wisdom and goodness of the Lord in what was happening.
OET (OET-LV) [fn] and_ YHWH _he/it_said because they_have_abandoned DOM law_of_my which I_set before_them and_not they_have_listened to_voice_of_my and_not they_have_walked in_it.
9:12 Note: KJB: Jer.9.13
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
