OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication

דַּבֵּ֞ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם

speak to/towards sons_of Yisrael and,say to,them

In Hebrew, they introduced speech by using two similar phrases. If this kind of repetition would not be natural in your language, you could combine them. Alternate translation: [Say to the sons of Israel]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙

sons_of Yisrael

Here sons of Israel refers to the entire Israelite people, not just the male descendants or the original 12 sons of Jacob. Alternate translation: [people of Israel] or [Israelites]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

אִ֕ישׁ

(a)_man

Here a man refers to any person, not a specific man. If your readers would not understand this in a general way, you could use a term that gives a broader interpretation. Alternate translation: [anyone] or [any person]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

יַפְלִ֖א נֶ֑דֶר

makes_~_special (a)_vow

This is an idiom meaning to make a special kind of vow. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [makes a special vow] or [makes a solemn promise]

Note 5 topic: translate-unknown

בְּעֶרְכְּךָ֥ נְפָשֹׁ֖ת לַֽיהוָֽה

in/on/at/with,valuation_of,your persons to/for=YHWH

The phrase your valuation occurs 19 times in the chapter. For people, the valuation is set here by Yahweh. Alternate translation: [by the valuation of persons that I, Yahweh, give you]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

27:2 The vow taken to become a Nazirite is also called a special vow (Num 6:2), but the vow mentioned here was probably a promise made to God when seeking a desired answer to prayer (see Gen 28:20-22). Pagan religions of the time sacrificed infants to their gods, but God outlawed such a practice (Lev 18:21; 20:2-5; cp. Gen 22:12-13). Consequently, the concept of being vowed to the Lord was measured in terms of service given, not in the sacrifice of a life. Whether the vow was made by the person or by another acting for him or her, payment was to be made to the sanctuary, apparently for the person’s expenses during the term of service. See also Num 6:1-21; Judg 13:5, 7; 1 Sam 1:11; Amos 2:11-12; Acts 18:18.
