OET (OET-LV)And they_are_coming to the house of_the the_synagogue_leader, and he_is_observing a_commotion and weeping and much screaming.

OET (OET-RV)As they approached Jairus’ house, Yeshua saw a big commotion with lots of crying and yelling going on.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἔρχονται

˱they˲_˓are˒_coming

Here Mark implies that Peter, James, John, and Jairus were traveling with Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [they come] or [Jesus, Jairus, and the three disciples come]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / go

ἔρχονται

˱they˲_˓are˒_coming

In a context such as this, your language might say “goes” instead of comes. Alternate translation: [he goes]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

θόρυβον, καὶ κλαίοντας καὶ ἀλαλάζοντας πολλά

˓a˒_commotion (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἔρχονται εἰς τόν οἶκον τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου καί θεωρεῖ θόρυβον καί κλαίοντας καί ἀλαλάζοντας πολλά)

This phrase expresses a single idea by using two terms connected with and. The phrase weeping and much wailing explains what actions created the commotion. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this meaning with an equivalent phrase that does not use and. Alternate translation: [a commotion, including weeping and much wailing] or [a commotion caused by weeping and much wailing]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

κλαίοντας καὶ ἀλαλάζοντας πολλά

weeping (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἔρχονται εἰς τόν οἶκον τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου καί θεωρεῖ θόρυβον καί κλαίοντας καί ἀλαλάζοντας πολλά)

The terms weeping and much wailing mean similar things. Mark is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [very much mourning] or [a great deal of weeping]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:38 The commotion and weeping and wailing confirmed the report of the messengers and dramatized the hopelessness of the situation. Such outbursts of grief were typical of funerals in Jesus’ day, where professional mourners were often hired (cp. Matt 9:23).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
