OET (OET-LV)For/Because I_am_saying through the grace which having_been_given to_me, to_everyone which being among you_all, not to_be_over_esteeming beyond what it_is_fitting to_be_thinking, but to_be_thinking in_order that to_be_being_sensible, to_each as the god allotted a_measure of_faith.

OET (OET-RV)Because of the grace which has been given to me, I am saying that every one of you should not think of yourself to be more esteemed than what’s appropriate, but rather to be sensible about what you think of yourselves according to how much faith God has allotted to each of you.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 12:1–21: Paul taught about our body, love, and revenge

In this section, Paul taught that believers should use their bodies in ways that are holy and acceptable to God. Our thinking must change so that it follows the will of God and not the thinking of the people of this world.

Paul also taught that believers should not be more proud of themselves than what is right before God. We all have different gifts from the Holy Spirit, and we should use them.

Believers should love in a genuine way, avoid evil deeds, honor others, be full of eagerness to serve the Lord. They should rejoice, be patient, pray, help others, and show hospitality.

Believers should bless the people who persecute them, and live in sympathy and harmony with other believers. They are not to be proud such that they avoid people with no status in society. They are not to think of themselves as wise.

Believers are not to take revenge, but leave that for God to do something about the evil done to them. They are to do things that are honorable and live at peace with others, if they can. They are to bless their enemies by doing good to them.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

The New Life in Christ (NRSV)

Our bodies, thinking, and deeds must be holy and good

12:3a

For by the grace given me

For: Here this word introduces a way to be renewed in the mind (12:2b).

by the grace given me: There are two ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as by:

  1. It introduces the means or instrument by which Paul spoke to them. For example:

through the grace that I have been given (NJB) (BSB, RSV, NIV, NJB, ESV, NABRE, KJV, NASB, NET, REB)

  2. It introduces the reason why Paul urged them. For example:

because of God’s gracious gift to me (GNT) (GNT, NLT, GW, NCV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the BDAG supports it.

the grace given me: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

the grace that God gave to me

grace: Here this word refers to God’s gift of power to Paul that made him an apostle.Moo (page 760), Morris (page 437), and Cranfield (page 611). See how you translated this word in 1:5.

12:3b

I say to every one of you:

every one of you: This phrase refers to every person in the group of believers at Rome. For example:

everyone among you (ESV)

12:3c

Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought,

Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought: This clause indicates that a believer should think about himself in a way that does not go beyond what God says about him. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think (ESV)

never pride yourself on being better than you really are (NJB)

Don’t think you are better than you really are (NLT)

12:3d

but think of yourself with sober judgment,

with sober judgment: This phrase refers to thinking in a reasonable or sensible way. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

Use good sense (CEV)

with proper/good thinking

12:3e

according to the measure of faith God has given you.

according to the measure of faith God has given you: This phrase indicates that a believer should think of himself according to the amount of faith that God has given to him. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you (NIV)

based on how much faith God has given to each of you

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
