הַמַּגִּיד֩ לִ֨י לֵאמֹ֜ר הִנֵּה־מֵ֣ת שָׁא֗וּל
(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when the_[one,who]_told to=me to=say see/lo/see! dead Shāʼūl/(Saul) and=he it_became like_[one],bearing_news in,his_own_of,eyes and,I,took_hold in=him/it and,I,killed_him in,Ziklag which/who I,gave,me to=him/it news )
If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [the one who declared to me that Saul was dead]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
וְהֽוּא־הָיָ֤ה כִמְבַשֵּׂר֙ בְּעֵינָ֔יו
and=he it_became (Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when the_[one,who]_told to=me to=say see/lo/see! dead Shāʼūl/(Saul) and=he it_became like_[one],bearing_news in,his_own_of,eyes and,I,took_hold in=him/it and,I,killed_him in,Ziklag which/who I,gave,me to=him/it news )
See how you translated the similar expression in [3:19](../03/19.md). Alternate translation: [and he thought that he was bringing good news]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche
וָאֹחֲזָ֣ה ב֔וֹ וָאֶהְרְגֵ֖הוּ
and,I,took_hold in=him/it and,I,killed_him
See how you translated the similar expression in [1:15](../01/15.md). Alternate translation: [that I had one of my soldiers seize him and kill him]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / irony
אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְתִתִּי־ל֖וֹ בְּשֹׂרָֽה
(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when the_[one,who]_told to=me to=say see/lo/see! dead Shāʼūl/(Saul) and=he it_became like_[one],bearing_news in,his_own_of,eyes and,I,took_hold in=him/it and,I,killed_him in,Ziklag which/who I,gave,me to=him/it news )
In this figure of speech, David actually means to communicate the opposite of the literal meaning of his words. (By saying that he gave him a reward for good news, he means that he killed the messenger for bringing what the messenger wrongly thought was good news.) If a speaker of your language would not say the opposite of what he meant, you could translate the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [which was how I punished him for telling me that he had killed Saul as if that had been good news]
OET (OET-LV) If/because the_one_who_told to_me to_say HERE he_has_died Shāʼūl and_he he_was like_one_bearing_news in_his_own_of_eyes and_I_took_hold in_him/it and_I_killed_him in_Tsiqlag/(Ziklag) that I_gave_me to_him/it news.
OET (OET-RV) when the messenger came to Tsiklag thinking he was bringing me good news and told me that Sha’ul was dead, I had him seized and executed.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
