11:1 Note: BHS has been faithful to the Leningrad Codex where there might be a question of the validity of the form and we keep the same form as BHS.

OET (OET-RV)The next spring (when kings usually go to war), David sent Yoav and his officials and all the Israeli warriors, and they defeated the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah.
¶ But David stayed in Yerushalem,

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

(Occurrence 0) It came about in the springtime

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was in,spring the,year at,time go_out the,kings and,sent Dāvid DOM Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and=DOM servants,his with=him/it and=DOM all/each/any/every Yisrael and,destroyed DOM sons_of ˊAmmōn and,besieged on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in enough/great(fs) and,David remained in/on/at/with,Jerusalem )

This introduces a new event in the story line.

(Occurrence 0) at the time

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was in,spring the,year at,time go_out the,kings and,sent Dāvid DOM Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and=DOM servants,his with=him/it and=DOM all/each/any/every Yisrael and,destroyed DOM sons_of ˊAmmōn and,besieged on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in enough/great(fs) and,David remained in/on/at/with,Jerusalem )

Alternate translation: “at the time of year”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) David sent out Joab, his servants, and all the army of Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was in,spring the,year at,time go_out the,kings and,sent Dāvid DOM Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and=DOM servants,his with=him/it and=DOM all/each/any/every Yisrael and,destroyed DOM sons_of ˊAmmōn and,besieged on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in enough/great(fs) and,David remained in/on/at/with,Jerusalem )

David sent them out to war. This can be stated clearly. Also, the word “his” refers to David. Alternate translation: “David sent Joab, his servants, and all the army of Israel to war”

This is the name of a city.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:1 In the spring of the year, the land began to dry out after the heavy winter rains. Kings avoided war during the rainy season.
• David stayed behind either because he was irresponsible in carrying out his royal duties or because he trusted Joab to efficiently handle the Ammonite problem (cp. 10:7). This is the first mention of a leader of Israel staying off the battlefield in a time of war.
