Here and frequently in this chapter, the author uses David, one person who was involved in these actions, to represent everyone who was involved. The expression Metheg Ammah seems to be a description rather than the name of a place. No place is known by that name. The parallel passage in [1 Chronicles 18:1](../../1ch/18/01.md) says that David captured the city of Gath and its surrounding towns. Metheg Ammah means “the bridle of the mother city.” Gath was the capital city of the Philistine confederation, and the author may speak of it here as a “bridle” to mean that conquering it gave David the means to control the entire Philistine confederation. (The word “bridle” could also indicate that previously the Philistines had exercised control over the Israelites from their capital city of Gath.) In your translation, you may wish to represent the expression “Metheg Ammah” and spell it the way it sounds in your language. Alternatively, you could express the probable meaning and translate the expression as a reference to Gath. If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to take the approach that it takes. Alternate translation: [Gath, their capital city]
