UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וַיִּנְחֲל֥וּ בְנֵי יוֹסֵ֖ף מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה וְאֶפְרָֽיִם

and,received_~_inheritance sons_of Yōşēf/(Joseph) Mənashsheh and,Ephraim

The author is speaking as if the people of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh were actually the sons of Joseph. Alternate translation: “And the descendants of Joseph, the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וַיִּנְחֲל֥וּ

and,received_~_inheritance

As the General Introduction to Joshua discusses, here and throughout this chapter, the author is using by association the idea of inheriting to mean receiving a lasting possession that would be passed down to future generations. Alternate translation: “received territory as a lasting possession”

Tribal Allotments of the Promised Land

After the Israelites had conquered portions of the Promised Land and Joshua had grown old, the Lord directed him to divide the rest of the land among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance (Joshua 13-20). The eastern tribes had already been allotted their land under Moses’ leadership (Numbers 32), but they continued to help the other tribes drive out the Canaanites from land west of the Jordan River. The Lord also instructed the Israelites to designate several cities of refuge, where someone could flee for protection from an avenger if they accidentally killed someone (Numbers 35; Joshua 20).
