Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

11:6 These two witnesses were given power to stop the rain and bring down plagues, as were Elijah (see 1 Kgs 17:1; 18:41-46) and Moses (see Exod 7:14-24; 8:1–11:10).
In this section, John saw a new part of this vision. He saw the temple in Jerusalem. Ungodly people controlled the outermost courtyard of the temple.
Then he saw two men who testified about God and Jesus. They were killed, but God caused them to live again and took them to heaven. At that time God caused an earthquake in which seven thousand people died. The rest of the people in Jerusalem then honored God.
Other examples of headings for this section are:
God’s two witnesses
Two men told/testified about God and Jesus in Jerusalem
These witnesses have power to shut the sky
These two have authority to prevent the sky
These witnesses(dual) have the ability to stop any rain
These witnesses have power to shut the sky so that no rain will fall: This clause indicates that the two witnesses are able to prevent rain from falling. God gave them the authority to do this. It is implied that they actually do shut the sky. Other ways to translate this clause are:
They have authority to shut up the sky so that there will be no rain (GNT)
These witnesses have authority to shut the sky in order to keep rain from falling (GW)
These men are able to shut the sky so it does not rain and they do so
These witnesses: The Greek word is literally “These.” The ending on the Greek word may imply two men or a man and a woman. Other ways to translate this Greek word are:
These two (REB)
They (CEV)
power to shut the sky so that no rain will fall: The word shut symbolically indicates that the witnesses are able to prevent rain from falling.
In some languages the meaning of this figure of speech is not clear or natural. If that is true in your language, translate its meaning. For example:
the power to stop the sky from raining (NCV)
able to prevent any rain from falling
so that no rain will fall during the days of their prophecy,
from raining during the time they are prophesying,
from falling during the days that they are proclaiming God’s messages/revelation to people.
during the days of their prophecy: This phrase refers to the 1,260 days in 11:3b. It may imply that the witnesses would prevent rain over the whole earth during that whole time. Or it may imply that they would prevent rain over different parts of the earth for shorter times. You should translate this phrase so that it allows either interpretation. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
during the days of their prophesying (RSV)
while they are prophesying (CEV)
the days of their prophecy: This phrase refers to the 1,260 days when God gives the witnesses messages to tell the people. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
the time they speak what God has revealed (GW)
the time when they were telling people what God has revealed to them
and power to turn the waters into blood
and they have authority to change any body of water into blood
They also have the ability to change any river, spring, lake, or sea into blood.
and power to turn the waters into blood: It is again implied that the witnesses actually do what they have the power or ability to do. For example:
they are able to change the waters into blood and they do so
the waters: The word waters refers generally to springs, rivers, lakes, oceans, and underground water. Use a word or phrase that can refer generally to various bodies of water. For example:
various bodies of water
all kinds/sorts of bodies of water
Some languages cannot refer generally to various bodies of water. If that is true in your language, list several different bodies of water. For example:
the rivers and oceans (NLT)
the oceans, rivers, and lakes
and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish.
and to afflict the earth with every kind of plague whenever they want.
And they have the ability to cause all kinds of disasters on people all over the earth as often as they desire to do so.
strike the earth with every kind of plague: This clause refers to causing plagues that hurt people. People everywhere will be affected. Other ways to translate this clause are:
afflict the earth with every kind of plague (REB)
cause all kinds of plagues on people over the whole earth
plague: This word refers to disasters that harm a lot of people. It can refer to diseases that kill many people. It can refer to locusts that damage many crops. Some languages do not have a general word such as plague. If that is true in your language, you may need to use a descriptive phrase. For example:
calamities/disasters that cause much death
things that cause people to suffer
See how you translated this word in 9:18.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
κλεῖσαι τὸν οὐρανόν, ἵνα μὴ ὑετὸς βρέχῃ
˓to˒_shut (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὗτοι ἔχουσιν τήν ἐξουσίαν κλεῖσαι τόν οὐρανόν ἵνα μή ὑετός βρέχῃ τάς ἡμέρας τῆς προφητείας αὐτῶν καί ἐξουσίαν ἔχουσιν ἐπί τῶν ὑδάτων στρέφειν αὐτά εἰς αἷμα καί πατάξαι τήν γῆν ἐν πάσῃ πληγῇ ὁσάκις ἐάν θελήσωσιν)
John is speaking as if these witnesses could literally close up the sky. As he goes on to say, he means that they will be able to prevent it from raining. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [to keep any rain from falling from the sky]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
τὰς ἡμέρας
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὗτοι ἔχουσιν τήν ἐξουσίαν κλεῖσαι τόν οὐρανόν ἵνα μή ὑετός βρέχῃ τάς ἡμέρας τῆς προφητείας αὐτῶν καί ἐξουσίαν ἔχουσιν ἐπί τῶν ὑδάτων στρέφειν αὐτά εἰς αἷμα καί πατάξαι τήν γῆν ἐν πάσῃ πληγῇ ὁσάκις ἐάν θελήσωσιν)
John is using the term days to refer to a specific time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [during the time]
