TSNTyndale Study Notes:

11:17 The thanksgiving prayer describes God as the one who is and who always was; the description “is still to come” (see 1:4, 8) no longer applies, because in this scene eternity has come and God has begun to reign.

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:15–19: The angel blew the seventh trumpet

In this section, the seventh angel blew his trumpet. Then voices in heaven announced that God and Jesus now rule over the whole world. The voices also announced that God would soon judge all people. He would reward believers but punish those destroying the earth. John also saw God’s temple in heaven opened and the ark of the covenant inside it.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The seventh angel and his trumpet

The seventh trumpet sounded/blew

11:17a

saying: “We give thanks to You, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was,

saying: What the elders said was part of their worship (11:16b). For example:

with these words: (NET)

In some languages it is more natural to begin a new sentence here. If that is true in your language, indicate that 11:17–18 is a part of the worship. For example:

In worship they said

We give thanks to You, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was: There is a textual issue in 11:17a: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the phrase the one who is and who was (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the phrase the one who is and who was and who is to come (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT recommends it. Both the Greek and the BSB indicate first that the speakers begin to give thanks. The direct address and the descriptive phrase is in the middle of the spoken words.

In some languages it is more natural to have the direct address and the descriptive phrase first. For example:

Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was, we give thanks to you

Almighty: This word is a title which means, “the one with the power to do anything.” For example:

the All-Powerful (NET)

See how you translated this word in 1:8 or 4:8.

the One who is and who was: The elders spoke these words as a title for God. It indicates that God is eternal. Other ways to translate these words are:

the One who is and was

him who exists and who always existed

11:17b

because You have taken Your great power and have begun to reign.

You have taken Your great power: This clause indicates that God began to use his great power, probably in a new way. Those powers are described in the chapters of Revelation. Other ways to translate this clause are:

you have used your great power (NCV)

you have shown/exercised your great power

you have acted/worked very powerfully

have begun to reign: God has always reigned, but this clause refers to reigning in a new way. Other ways to translate this clause are:

have…entered upon your reign (REB)

have begun ruling as king (GW)

UTNuW Translation Notes:

ὁ ὢν, καὶ ὁ ἦν

¬the ¬the who who (Some words not found in SR-GNT: λέγοντες Εὐχαριστοῦμεν σοί Κύριε ὁ Θεός ὁ Παντοκράτωρ ὁ ὤν καί ὁ ἦν καί ὅτι εἴληφας τήν δύναμιν σοῦ τήν μεγάλην καί ἐβασίλευσας)

Some ancient manuscripts read the one being and the one having been. ULT follows that reading. Other ancient manuscripts add “and who is to come.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of ULT.
