13.9 Elohim

RVAnd I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people; and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

SLTAnd I brought the third through fire, and I purified them as purifying silver, and I tried them as trying gold: he shall call on my name and I will answer him: I said, He is my people; and he shall say, Jehovah my God.

WbstrAnd I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people; and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

KJB-1769And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

KJB-1611And I will bring the thirde part through the fire, and wil refine them as siluer is refined, & will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my Name, and I wil heare them: I wil say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.
(Modernised spelling is same as from KJB-1769 above, apart from marking of added words (and possibly capitalisation and punctuation))

BshpsAnd the same third part wyl I bring through the fire, & wyl cleanse them as the siluer is cleansed, yea and trye them lyke as golde is tryed: then shal they call vpon my name and I wyll heare them, I wyll say it is my people, and they shall say, Lorde my God.
(And the same third part will I bring through the fire, and will cleanse them as the silver is cleansed, yea and try them like as gold is tried: then shall they call upon my name and I will hear them, I will say it is my people, and they shall say, Lord my God.)

GnvaAnd I will bring that third part thorowe the fire, and will fine them as the siluer is fined, and will trye them as golde is tryed: they shall call on my Name, and I will heare them: I will say, It is my people, and they shall say, The Lord is my God.
(And I will bring that third part through the fire, and will fine them as the silver is fined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my Name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people, and they shall say, The Lord is my God.)

CvdlAnd the same thirde parte wil I brynge thorow the fyre, and will clense them, as the syluer is clensed: Yee and trye them, like as golde is tryed. Then shall they call vpon my name, and I wil heare them: I wil saye: it is my people. And they shal saye: LORDE, my God.
(And the same third part will I bring through the fire, and will cleanse them, as the silver is cleansed: Ye/You_all and try them, like as gold is tried. Then shall they call upon my name, and I will hear them: I will say: it is my people. And they shall say: LORD, my God.)

WyclAnd Y schal lede the thridde part bi fier, and Y schal brenne hem, as siluer is brent, and Y schal preue hem, as gold is preuyd. He schal clepe to help my name, and Y schal graciously here him; and Y schal seie, Thou art my puple, and he schal seie, Thou art my Lord God.
(And I shall lead the third part by fire, and I shall burn hem, as silver is burnt, and I shall prove hem, as gold is preuyd. He shall call to help my name, and I shall graciously here him; and I shall say, Thou/You art my people, and he shall say, Thou/You art my Lord God.)

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

and,I_will_bring (Some words not found in UHB: and,I_will_bring DOM the_third,[part] in,fire and,I,will_refine_them as,refines DOM (the),silver and,I,will_test_them as,tests DOM the=gold he/it he/it_called/named on,name_of,my and,I answer DOM=him/it say people_of,[is]_my he/it and=he say YHWH God_of,[is]_my )

Here Yahweh is speaking as if the trials and suffering he would bring upon the people were the fire. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I will bring the third through great suffering]

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

he/it he/it_called/named on,name_of,my

The pronoun He refers to the remaining third of the people, spoken of collectively as a single group. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [That remaining third will call on my name]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

on,name_of,my

Here, my name represents Yahweh himself. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [me]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

God_of,[is]_my

The speaker is not using this possessive form my God to indicate that he possesses or controls Yahweh. Rather, he is using these words to indicate that Yahweh is the God whom he worships. If a speaker of your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could express this idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the God I worship]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

and,I,will_refine_them as,refines (Some words not found in UHB: and,I_will_bring DOM the_third,[part] in,fire and,I,will_refine_them as,refines DOM (the),silver and,I,will_test_them as,tests DOM the=gold he/it he/it_called/named on,name_of,my and,I answer DOM=him/it say people_of,[is]_my he/it and=he say YHWH God_of,[is]_my )

These two phrases I will refine them as one refines the silver and I will test them as one tests the gold mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [I will thoroughly purify and test them as a metalworker refines silver and gold]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

he/it & say people_of,[is]_my & and=he say YHWH God_of,[is]_my

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [I will say that he is my people, and he will say that Yahweh is his God.]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

and,I,will_refine_them as,refines (Some words not found in UHB: and,I_will_bring DOM the_third,[part] in,fire and,I,will_refine_them as,refines DOM (the),silver and,I,will_test_them as,tests DOM the=gold he/it he/it_called/named on,name_of,my and,I answer DOM=him/it say people_of,[is]_my he/it and=he say YHWH God_of,[is]_my )

The point of this comparison is that just as silver is refined by fire to remove impurities, so Yahweh will purify his people through trials. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [I will purify them of impurities, just as fire purifies silver]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

and,I,will_test_them as,tests (Some words not found in UHB: and,I_will_bring DOM the_third,[part] in,fire and,I,will_refine_them as,refines DOM (the),silver and,I,will_test_them as,tests DOM the=gold he/it he/it_called/named on,name_of,my and,I answer DOM=him/it say people_of,[is]_my he/it and=he say YHWH God_of,[is]_my )

The point of this comparison is that just as gold is tested by fire to prove its genuineness, so Yahweh will test his people through trials. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [I will test them to prove they are genuine, just as gold is tested by fire to prove its genuineness]
