OET (OET-LV) And_when_stumble_they they_will_be_helped help a_little and_they_will_join_themselves to_them many_people by_intrigues.
OET (OET-RV) When they fall, they’ll receive a little help. Many will join themselves with them in hypocrisy.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
This paragraph tells what will happen to those who resist the evil king of the North.
Now when they fall, they will be granted a little help,
While they suffer, they will have a bit of help,
While they are suffering such persecution, a few people will give them a little help.
Now when they fall: The words Now when they fall refers to the time of persecution of the faithful Jews. These faithful ones will suffer the kind of persecution mentioned in the previous verse part. Other ways to translate this include:
When they fall victim (NRSV)
During these persecutions (NLT)
When they suffer in this way
they will be granted a little help: The Hebrew is more literally “they will be helped with a little help.” This is a reference to human help, which is always limited. This help probably includes, but is not limited to, the resistance of the Maccabees that is described in 1 Maccabees 2–4. Here are some other ways to translate this:
they will be given a little help
they will have/get some human help
some small help will come to them
they will be helped a little bit
but many will join them insincerely.
but many who join with them will do so insincerely.
However, many will unite/ally themselves with them for selfish reasons.
but many will join them insincerely: The common Hebrew conjunction that the BSB translates as but here introduces something that lessens the value of the “help” mentioned in the previous verse part. In some languages it may therefore be natural to translate this with a conjunction indicating contrast, as the GW has done:
but many who are not sincere will join them (GW)
many will join them insincerely: The Hebrew of this clause is more literally “many will join themselves to them with slippery words.” This seems to indicate that many people would claim to support the Jewish resistance but would not be dependable or faithful. Here are some other ways to translate this:
many who join them will not be sincere (NLT)
many will unite with them deceitfully (NET)
many who join them will do so for selfish reasons (GNT)
וְנִלְו֧וּ עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם רַבִּ֖ים בַּחֲלַקְלַקּֽוֹת
and,they_will_join_themselves to,them many by,intrigues
This refers to other people who will pretend to help the wise persons, but not because they truly wish to help them.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְנִלְו֧וּ
and,they_will_join_themselves
Here join themselves means “come to help.” Alternate translation: “will come to help them”
11:34 A little help came when the family of Mattathias and those around them, who were called Maccabees, instigated a national revolt which Antiochus, occupied elsewhere, could not put down. In 164 BC, three years after the Temple had been desecrated, the Maccabees recaptured Jerusalem, removed the sacrilegious object (the statue of Zeus), cleansed the altar, and restored the daily sacrifices (8:11-14, 26; 1 Maccabees 1:59). This event is commemorated at Hanukkah (see John 10:22).
OET (OET-LV) And_when_stumble_they they_will_be_helped help a_little and_they_will_join_themselves to_them many_people by_intrigues.
OET (OET-RV) When they fall, they’ll receive a little help. Many will join themselves with them in hypocrisy.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
