OET (OET-LV)And_the_rest_of the_beasts they_removed dominion_of_their and_a_prolonging in_life(s) it_was_given to_them until a_time and_a_time.

OET (OET-RV)As for the other creatures, their authority to rule was taken away, but an extension of life was given to them for a season and a time.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 7:1–28 Daniel dreamed about four beasts

Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.

Paragraph 7:11–12

In Daniel’s vision, the fourth beast was killed and the other beasts lost their power.

7:12a–b

As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was removed, but they were granted an extension of life for a season and a time: These verse parts tell what happened to the other three beasts. There are two ways to understand when the authority of the other beasts was taken away:

  1. It happened at the same time or after the fourth beast was killed. For example:

As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. (NRSV) (BSB, KJV, NASB, RSV/NRSV, ESV, NJB, GW, GNT, NLT, CEV)

  2. It had happened before the fourth beast was killed. The information is therefore parenthetical. For example:

(The power and rule of the other animals had been taken from them, but they were permitted to live for a certain period of time.) (NCV) (NIV, NET, NCV)

It is recommended that you leave this vague and open, if possible. In a dream like this, time sequences may not have been very clear. If you must choose, it is recommended that you follow the first interpretation, leaving the timeline as general as possible. For example:

The other beasts had their power taken away, but they were allowed to live for a certain time.

7:12a

As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was removed,

As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was removed: This is literally, “And the rest of the beasts, they removed their dominion.” The text does not indicate who removed their dominion, and the BSB has translated this as a passive clause. There are at least two ways to translate this:

their dominion: The Aramaic word that the BSB translates as their dominion here refers to the beasts’ power to rule. The beasts not only lost their right or authority to rule, they lost their power and actually ceased to rule. Make this clear in your translation. For example:

the power and rule of the other animals (NCV)

7:12b

but they were granted an extension of life for a season and a time.

but: The common Aramaic conjunction that the BSB translates as but here indicates a contrast with the previous clause. See the General Comment on 7:12a–b.

they were granted an extension of life: The Aramaic text is more literally “a prolonging in life was given to them.” This indicates that the other beasts were allowed to continue to live. This is a passive clause and there are at least two ways to translate it:

for a season and a time: The Aramaic phrase that the BSB literally translates as for a season and a time indicates that God continued to allow the beasts to live. The two nouns meaning time and season are synonyms and together they refer to an undefined but limited period of time. This season and a time had a fixed and definite end. Here are some other ways to translate this:

for a certain time

for a limited time (GNT)

a while longer (NLT)

General Comment on 7:12a–b

In some languages it may be natural to indicate the contrasting relationship of the two verse parts 7:12a–b in 7:12a. For example:

The other beasts, though deprived of their authority, were allowed to remain alive until an appointed time and season. (REB)

uW Translation Notes:

וּשְׁאָר֙ חֵֽיוָתָ֔א

and,the_rest_of of,the_beasts

It may be helpful to your readers to say, “the other three beasts.”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

הֶעְדִּ֖יו שָׁלְטָנְה֑וֹן

taken_away dominion_of,their

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “the judge took away their authority to rule” or “their authority to rule ended”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְאַרְכָ֧ה בְחַיִּ֛ין יְהִ֥יבַת לְה֖וֹן עַד־זְמַ֥ן וְעִדָּֽן

and,a_prolonging in,life(s) granted to,them until season and,a_time

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “they continued to live for a period of time” or “the judge let them live a little longer”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:12 a while longer: God, the Judge of the nations, can extend the lives of nations and individuals (cp. 4:27). Defeated nations who have lost their political and military hegemony can continue to live on culturally and ethnically, and can retain their national identities. This happened with the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, and the Greeks.
