OET (OET-LV) And_the_court it_will_sit and_dominion_of_his they_will_remove to_annihilate and_to_destroy until the_end.
OET (OET-RV) But the court will sit, and then his authority to rule will be taken away—to perish and be forever destroyed.
Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.
This final evil ruler will lose his power. God’s people will begin to rule in God’s kingdom.
But the court will convene,
¶ “But the members of the court will sit on their thrones and begin to judge,
¶ “Then the judges will take their seats/places in court to give their judgment/verdict.
But the court will convene: The members of the court, the judges, will take their places in order to begin judging. See how you translated this idea in 7:10d. For example:
But the court shall sit in judgment (ESV)
Then the heavenly court will sit in judgment (GNT)
But then the judges will take their places/seats in court
In some cultures judges in courts may not sit down, and translating this idea may distract from the main point, the act of judging. In those languages you may wish to translate the function of the action and say:
But the court will decide what should happen. (NCV)
But then the court will pass judgment (NLT)
and his dominion will be taken away and completely destroyed forever.
They will take away the power of that king. They will destroy it and bring it to an end!
They will put a complete end to his rule/authority for all time.
and his dominion will be taken away: The Aramaic text is more literally “and they will remove his power/dominion to destroy.” The subject is the members of the court, the judges. There are at least two ways to translate this:
Using a passive verb. For example:
and his ruling authority will be removed (NET)
and all his power will be taken away (NLT)
Using an active verb. For example:
the heavenly court will…take away his power (GNT)
and completely destroyed forever: The Aramaic text is more literally: “to annihilate and destroy it until the end.” The two verbs “annihilate” and “destroy” are synonyms in this context and together they emphasize the idea. The BSB has combined them into one emphatic phrase, and this may be a good model to follow in some languages. Here is another way to translate this:
destroyed and abolished forever (NET)
וְדִינָ֖א יִתִּ֑ב
and,the,court sit
This means that the judge will be ready to investigate evidence and make his judgment. Alternate translation: “But the judge will judge” or “The judge will sit down”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
וְשָׁלְטָנֵ֣הּ יְהַעְדּ֔וֹן לְהַשְׁמָדָ֥ה וּלְהוֹבָדָ֖ה
and,dominion_of,his taken_away to,annihilate and,to,destroy
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “the members of the court will take the royal power away from the newest king, and they will consume him and destroy him”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
וְשָׁלְטָנֵ֣הּ
and,dominion_of,his
Here, dominion refers to “authority.” See how you translated this in [Daniel 7:14](../07/14.md).
7:26 God’s court has the authority to pass judgment and the power to remove and destroy this arrogant king.
OET (OET-LV) And_the_court it_will_sit and_dominion_of_his they_will_remove to_annihilate and_to_destroy until the_end.
OET (OET-RV) But the court will sit, and then his authority to rule will be taken away—to perish and be forever destroyed.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
