Section 7:1–28 Daniel dreamed about four beasts

Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.

7:28b

As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me greatly,

Thinking about the dream, I, Daniel, was very alarmed.
I became very disturbed as I thought about it.

As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me greatly: This phrase indicates that Daniel was worried and concerned because of his thoughts about the vision he had just seen. There are at least two ways to translate this phrase:

As an active clause, as in the Aramaic text. For example:
As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly alarmed me. (RSV)
As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me greatly (NET)
As a passive clause. For example:
I, Daniel, was terrified by my thoughts (GW)

Use the form that is most natural in your language.

7:28c

and my face turned pale.

I turned pale,
My face became white,

and my face turned pale: The Aramaic text that the BSB translates as my face turned pale is more literally “my brightness changed on me.” See how you translated this in 5:6a. Here are some other ways to translate it:

and I turned pale (GW)

and my face was pale with fear (NLT)

General Comment on 7:28b–c

In some languages it may be natural to make the connection between 7:28b and 7:28c clear by speaking of a cause and an effect. For example:

^28bI was so frightened ^28cthat I turned pale (GNT)

But I kept the matter to myself.”

but I kept the dream secret/hidden.
but I did not tell anyone what I had seen in the vision.

But: The common Aramaic conjunction that the BSB translates as But here introduces what Daniel did after seeing the vision. The English versions translate it in one of two ways:

It introduces a contrast. Even though Daniel was very upset at the vision, he told no one what he had seen. For example:
but (NLT) (BSB, NLT, NIV, NASB, RSV/NRSV, ESV, REB, NET, NJB, NCV, KJV)
It introduces a continuation. For example:
and (GNT) (GNT, CEV)

You should introduce Daniel’s reaction in a way that is natural in your language. In many languages it will be natural to indicate a contrast to what one would expect.

I kept the matter to myself: The Aramaic text that the BSB translates as I kept the matter to myself is literally “I kept the matter in my heart.” In this context it indicates that Daniel kept his dream/vision and its meaning to himself. He did not tell anyone else about it. Here are some other ways to translate this:

I kept these things to myself (NLT)

I kept everything to myself (GNT)

I told no one what I had seen/learned.

Daniel is using my splendors changed upon me as a common expression of the culture to mean “my face turned pale.” If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and my face turned pale]
