OET (OET-RV)That’s everything that I saw in my visions. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts made me very upset and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 7:1–28 Daniel dreamed about four beasts

Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.

Paragraph 7:28

This verse forms the conclusion of this section.

7:28a

Thus ends the matter.

Thus ends the matter: This clause indicates that the vision report that began in 7:1 had concluded. Here are some other ways to translate this:

That was the end of the vision. (NLT)

This is the end of the account. (GNT)

7:28b

As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me greatly,

As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me greatly: This phrase indicates that Daniel was worried and concerned because of his thoughts about the vision he had just seen. There are at least two ways to translate this phrase:

Use the form that is most natural in your language.

7:28c

and my face turned pale.

and my face turned pale: The Aramaic text that the BSB translates as my face turned pale is more literally “my brightness changed on me.” See how you translated this in 5:6a. Here are some other ways to translate it:

and I turned pale (GW)

and my face was pale with fear (NLT)

General Comment on 7:28b–c

In some languages it may be natural to make the connection between 7:28b and 7:28c clear by speaking of a cause and an effect. For example:

28bI was so frightened 28cthat I turned pale (GNT)

7:28d

But I kept the matter to myself.”

But: The common Aramaic conjunction that the BSB translates as But here introduces what Daniel did after seeing the vision. The English versions translate it in one of two ways:

  1. It introduces a contrast. Even though Daniel was very upset at the vision, he told no one what he had seen. For example:

but (NLT) (BSB, NLT, NIV, NASB, RSV/NRSV, ESV, REB, NET, NJB, NCV, KJV)

  2. It introduces a continuation. For example:

    and (GNT) (GNT, CEV)

You should introduce Daniel’s reaction in a way that is natural in your language. In many languages it will be natural to indicate a contrast to what one would expect.

I kept the matter to myself: The Aramaic text that the BSB translates as I kept the matter to myself is literally “I kept the matter in my heart.” In this context it indicates that Daniel kept his dream/vision and its meaning to himself. He did not tell anyone else about it. Here are some other ways to translate this:

I kept these things to myself (NLT)

I kept everything to myself (GNT)

I told no one what I had seen/learned.

This is the end of the Aramaic section of the book of Daniel.

uW Translation Notes:

עַד־כָּ֖ה סוֹפָ֣א דִֽי־מִלְּתָ֑א

until this_point the,end that the=matter

This means that Daniel has finished describing the vision. Alternate translation: “That is what I saw in my vision” or “This is the end of the description of what I saw in my vision”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:1-28 This chapter contains a terrifying vision (7:2-14) and its interpretation (7:17-27). The sequence of kingdoms recalls Nebuchadnezzar’s dream some forty-five years earlier (2:1-45).
