OET (OET-LV)my_breath/wind/spirit it_was_distressed I Dāniyyʼēl in_the_midst_of the_sheath and_visions_of my_head they_alarmed_me.

OET (OET-RV)As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed inside me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 7:1–28 Daniel dreamed about four beasts

Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.

Paragraph 7:15–18

While still in a dreamlike state, Daniel asked about the meaning of what he had seen. God’s servant briefly explained to Daniel the meaning of his dream. He gave a summary of what the vision symbolized.

7:15a

I, Daniel, was grieved in my spirit,

I, Daniel, was grieved in my spirit: The Aramaic phrase that the BSB translates as was grieved in my spirit is more literally “my spirit was distressed in its sheath.” A sheath is a covering or holder for a sword. This idiom here indicates that Daniel felt disturbed or unhappy in his inner being. Translate this in a way that is natural in your language. For example:

My heart/liver was sad

I, Daniel, was deeply troubled (GW)

I, Daniel, was worried (NCV)

7:15b

and the visions in my mind alarmed me.

and the visions in my mind alarmed me: This verse part intensifies the previous verse part. It emphasizes that Daniel was very upset by what he had seen in his dreams. Here are some other ways to translate this:

and the visions of my head terrified me (NRSV)

and my visions frightened me (GW)

the visions in my mind: The Aramaic phrase that the BSB translates as the visions in my mind is literally “the visions of my head,” as in the NRSV. Notice that Daniel was still seeing the vision while he was feeling this alarm. The context of the following verse indicates that he had not woken up. Refer to Daniel’s dream in a way that is natural in your language. For example:

my visions (NLT)

General Comment on 7:15a–b

In some languages it may be natural to reverse the order of the two clauses 7:15a–b. For example:

15bThe visions I saw alarmed me, 15aand I was deeply disturbed. (GNT)

In other languages it may be natural to combine the two clauses into one. For example:

I, Daniel, was worried and frightened by what I had seen in the vision.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

אֶתְכְּרִיַּ֥ת רוּחִ֛י & בְּג֣וֹא נִדְנֶ֑ה & וְחֶזְוֵ֥י רֵאשִׁ֖י יְבַהֲלֻנַּֽנִי

troubled my=breath/wind/spirit & in_[the],midst_of body & (Some words not found in UHB: troubled my=breath/wind/spirit I Dāniyyʼēl in_[the],midst_of body and=visions_of of,my_head they,alarmed_me )

These two phrases describe how Daniel was feeling. The second one gives more information about the first one, explaining about his grieved spirit.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

אֶתְכְּרִיַּ֥ת רוּחִ֛י & בְּג֣וֹא נִדְנֶ֑ה

troubled my=breath/wind/spirit & in_[the],midst_of body

Here my spirit refers to Daniel himself. Alternate translation: “I was very sad inside”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:1-28 This chapter contains a terrifying vision (7:2-14) and its interpretation (7:17-27). The sequence of kingdoms recalls Nebuchadnezzar’s dream some forty-five years earlier (2:1-45).
