Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.

Daniel received some more information about the fourth beast in the vision

Then I wanted to know the true meaning of the fourth beast,

Then: The Aramaic conjunction that the BSB translates as Then here introduces Daniel’s next question. He had asked about the meaning of the beasts in general, but now he also wanted to know about the fourth beast in particular.

I wanted to know the true meaning of the fourth beast: The Aramaic is more literally “I desired to make certain concerning the fourth beast.” Daniel wanted to receive information about the fourth beast that he had seen. Since he had already received general information (7:17), another way to translate this is:

I wanted to know more about the fourth beast (GNT)

Here are some further ways to translate this:

I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth beast (RSV)

I wanted to know what the fourth animal represented/symbolized.

I wanted to learn the meaning of the fourth beast

7:19b

which was different from all the others—extremely terrifying—

which was different from all the others: The fourth beast was different from the other three beasts. In some languages it may be necessary to make this explicit. For example:

was different from all the others: The fourth beast was different in its appearance. The following context implies that it appeared more impressive and terrifying than the other beasts. Here are some other ways to translate this:

In some languages it may be natural to translate this long sentence as two or more shorter sentences. For example:
