7:19 OSHB note: BHS has been faithful to the Leningrad Codex where there might be a question of the validity of the form and we keep the same form as BHS.

OET (OET-RV)But I still wanted to know more about the fourth creature that was different from all the others, absolutely dreadful, with its iron teeth and bronze claws, and which devoured, then crushed and trampled down with its feet what was left.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 7:1–28 Daniel dreamed about four beasts

Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.

Paragraph 7:19–22

Daniel received some more information about the fourth beast in the vision

7:19a

Then I wanted to know the true meaning of the fourth beast,

Then: The Aramaic conjunction that the BSB translates as Then here introduces Daniel’s next question. He had asked about the meaning of the beasts in general, but now he also wanted to know about the fourth beast in particular.

I wanted to know the true meaning of the fourth beast: The Aramaic is more literally “I desired to make certain concerning the fourth beast.” Daniel wanted to receive information about the fourth beast that he had seen. Since he had already received general information (7:17), another way to translate this is:

I wanted to know more about the fourth beast (GNT)

Here are some further ways to translate this:

I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth beast (RSV)

I wanted to know what the fourth animal represented/symbolized.

I wanted to learn the meaning of the fourth beast

7:19b

which was different from all the others—extremely terrifying—

which was different from all the others: The fourth beast was different from the other three beasts. In some languages it may be necessary to make this explicit. For example:

It was different from all the other beasts

It was different from the other three creatures

was different from all the others: The fourth beast was different in its appearance. The following context implies that it appeared more impressive and terrifying than the other beasts. Here are some other ways to translate this:

which was not like any of the others (GNT)

it appeared different from the other beasts

extremely terrifying: This phrase probably indicates the way in which this beast was different from the other beasts.

7:19c

devouring and crushing with iron teeth and bronze claws,

devouring and crushing with iron teeth and bronze claws: This verse part indicates what made the fourth beast so terrifying: it had iron teeth and bronze claws. See the notes on iron teeth at 7:7d.

In some languages it may be natural to supply a verb here. For example:

and had iron teeth and bronze claws (NCV)

bronze claws: The bronze claws on the fourth beast are mentioned here for the first time. bronze is a strong metal with a reddish-brown color. See how you translated bronze at 2:32c.

7:19d

then trampling underfoot whatever was left.

then trampling underfoot whatever was left: The Aramaic text is more literally “and the rest with its feet it was trampling.”

General Comment on 7:19a–d

In some languages it may be natural to translate this long sentence as two or more shorter sentences. For example:

19aThen I wanted to know the truth about the fourth animal, 19bwhich was so different from all the others. It was very terrifying 19cand had iron teeth and bronze claws. It devoured and crushed its victims, 19dand trampled whatever was left. (GW)

General Comment on 7:19c-d

In some languages it may be natural to translate 7:19c–d as a separate sentence. For example:

It was the animal that crushed and ate what it killed and then walked on whatever was left. (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

דְּחִילָ֣ה יַתִּ֗ירָה

terrifying exceedingly

Alternate translation: “very frightening”

רָֽפְסָֽה

stamped

Alternate translation: “walked on and crushed”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:1-28 This chapter contains a terrifying vision (7:2-14) and its interpretation (7:17-27). The sequence of kingdoms recalls Nebuchadnezzar’s dream some forty-five years earlier (2:1-45).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.OET logo mark
