Section 7:1–28 Daniel dreamed about four beasts

Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.

Paragraph 7:13–14

Daniel continued to describe his vision. He saw the figure of a man approaching the throne of God.

7:13a

In my vision in the night I continued to watch,

In my vision in the night I continued to watch: This clause introduces the next episode in Daniel’s dream. Other ways to translate it include:

I saw in the night visions (ESV)

I was watching in the night visions (NET)

As my vision continued that night (NLT)

As I continued to watch the vision that night (CEV)

In some languages it may be natural to translate this clause as a phrase with no verb. See the General Comment on 7:13a–b. For example:

In my visions during the night (GW)

7:13b

and I saw One like the Son of Man

and I saw One like the Son of Man: Daniel saw what appeared to be a human figure, the figure of a man. He did not say that this was a man, but just that he was like, or similar to, a man. Here are some other ways to translate this:

I saw what looked like a human being (GNT)

and there came into my sight a figure in human form

there appeared someone resembling a son of the human race

the Son of Man: The phrase the Son of Man refers to a male person who is of the race of men, that is, a human being. See Ezekiel 33:2. The phrase the Son of Man is used as a Messianic title and applied to Jesus in the Gospels. See the notes on Matthew 8:20, Mark 2:10, 28, Luke 6:5, 22, and John 1:51 and John 3:13–14. If you have already translated the Gospels, try to use the same phrase here as you did there.

General Comment on 7:13a–b

In some languages it may be natural to combine the clauses 7:13a–b, using only one main verb. For example

During this vision in the night, I saw what looked like a human being (GNT)

In my vision at night I saw in front of me someone who looked like a human being (NCV)

7:13c

coming with the clouds of heaven.

coming with the clouds of heaven: Daniel saw the figure resembling a son of man coming in his direction, surrounded by clouds. In some languages it may be natural to translate this using an independent clause. For example:

He was approaching me, surrounded by clouds. (GNT)

And with the clouds of the sky, one like a son of man was approaching. (NET)

coming: In some languages it may be necessary to say where the figure was coming. The figure was coming toward Daniel and the One who was sitting on the throne. In some languages it may be natural to say:

approaching

with the clouds of heaven: In some languages it may be unnecessary and unnatural to refer to clouds as clouds of heaven. It may be more natural to follow the GNT and simply say:

surrounded by clouds (GNT)

General Comment on 7:13b–c

The BSB has reordered the Aramaic text, which is more literally “and lo/behold, with the clouds of the heavens like a son of man he was coming.” Many English versions similarly put the phrase “with the clouds of heaven” at the end of the sentence. However, some other versions follow the Aramaic word order. For example:

and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man (RSV)

Use the order which is more natural in your language.

7:13d

He approached the Ancient of Days

and was led into His presence.

He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence: The Aramaic verb phrase that the BSB translates as was led into His presence is more literally “and they brought him before him.” The subject is not indicated. There are several ways of translating this:

The person that Daniel saw was not a normal man, but had a human figure like a man. “someone was coming who resembled a son of man, that is, he had a human figure”

עִם־עֲנָנֵ֣י שְׁמַיָּ֔⁠א

Alternate translation: “with the clouds of the sky”

עַתִּ֤יק יֽוֹמַיָּ⁠א֙
