OET (OET-LV) Until that he_came the_one_ancient the_days and_(the)_judgement it_was_given for_the_holy_ones_of the_Most_High and_the_appointed_time it_arrived and_the_kingdom they_took_possession_of the_holy_ones.
OET (OET-RV) until the ancient one arrived and judged in favour of his followers. Then the time arrived when they took possession of the kingdom.
Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.
Daniel received some more information about the fourth beast in the vision
until the Ancient of Days arrived and pronounced judgment in favor of the saints of the Most High: The little horn continued to attack and conquer until the Ancient of Days came. Then both the conquest and the war ceased. Once God had come and given judgment, the little horn could no longer attack and conquer God’s holy people.
In some languages it will be good to begin a new sentence here or in this verse part. For example:
Then the one who had been living forever came and pronounced judgment in favor of the people of the Supreme God (GNT)
until God, who has been alive forever, came. He judged in favor of the holy people who belong to the Most High God (NCV)
Then came the Ancient of Days, the Most High! He decided in favor of his own holy people
until the Ancient of Days arrived
The battle continued until the One who is ancient in years came
But then the Ancient/Eternal God the Most High, came to his own people
the Ancient of Days arrived: See how you translated this way of referring to God in 7:9c and 7:13d. If you must say where the Ancient of Days came from, you should indicate that he came from his throne in heaven. If you must indicate where he came to, you should indicate that he came to earth, or to his people.
and pronounced judgment in favor of the saints of the Most High,
and he gave judgment in favor of the holy people, the people belonging to him, God Most High.
and judged in their favor,
and pronounced judgment in favor of the saints of the Most High: God pronounced judgment in favor of his people. This means that he declared them to be innocent, or in the right. It is implied that he then saved them from the aggression of the final horn.
pronounced judgment: God acted as judge and issued his decision. Use an expression that is natural in your language. For example:
judged
gave/declared his decision
the saints of the Most High: See how you translated this in 7:18a.
Since the subject of the verbs in this verse part is the Ancient of Days, God himself, in some languages it may be necessary to say “his own people.” It is important to avoid the wrong meaning that the Ancient of Days is someone different from the Most High. It may be helpful to avoid this wrong meaning by following the NLT:
until the Ancient One—the Most High—came and judged in favor of his holy people (NLT)
and the time came for them to possess the kingdom.
Then the right time came and they received the power to rule.
and so in God’s time they began to rule/reign over the land.
and the time came for them to possess the kingdom: It is implied that at this point the little horn was defeated. It had lost all its power to defeat God’s people and all its greatness and power to rule. Instead, God’s holy people possess the kingdom. This was the result of God’s coming and judgment. In some languages it may be natural to indicate this by saying:
and so the time came when God’s people possessed the kingdom
the time came: The Aramaic phrase that the BSB translates as the time came can also be translated as “the appointed time arrived.”
for them to possess the kingdom: The common Aramaic conjunction that the BSB translates as for here introduces what happened when the time came. In some languages it may be possible to say:
for God’s people to possess the kingdom
them to possess the kingdom: The Aramaic phrase that the BSB translates as them to possess the kingdom means “they received the authority to rule.” God gave his people the right and power to rule. The text does not state exactly what kingdom they ruled, whether it was the whole earth or one particular land, so it is best to leave this as general as possible. For example:
then the time came for them to receive the power to rule (NCV)
Then the time arrived for the holy people to take over the kingdom. (NLT)
The time had arrived for God’s people to receive royal power. (GNT)
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
עַ֣ד דִּֽי־אֲתָ֗ה עַתִּיק֙ יֽוֹמַיָּ֔א וְדִינָ֣א יְהִ֔ב
until that/who came ancient the=days and,(the),judgment given
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “until the Ancient of Days came and brought justice”
עַתִּיק֙ יֽוֹמַיָּ֔א
ancient the=days
This is a title for God that emphasizes that he is eternal. See how you translated this title in [Daniel 7:9](../07/09.md).
7:22 The Ancient One turned the tide of the battle when he judged in favor of his holy people. In God’s time, his people would take over the kingdom with their King (7:13-14).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
