OET (OET-RV) Then he said:
§ The fourth creature will be a fourth kingdom in the world which will be different from all the other kingdoms. It will devour the whole world, and trample it down and crush it.
Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.
The servant of God explained to Daniel the symbolism of the fourth kingdom and its horns.
This is what he said:
This is what he said/replied to me:
God's servant then told me what this meant:
This is what he said: The servant of God who was explaining the meaning of the dream continued to talk to Daniel. The clause This is what he said introduces the continuation of the explanation of the meaning. Here are some other ways to introduce this:
This is the explanation I was given (GNT)
He gave me this explanation (NIV)
‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on the earth,
“The fourth beast is/represents a fourth earthly kingdom
“The fourth creature is a symbol of a fourth kingdom that will come to power in the world.
The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on the earth: The speaker explained that the fourth beast represented a fourth kingdom. It functioned as a symbol for a kingdom. Here are some other ways to translate this:
As for the fourth beast, there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth (RSV)
The fourth beast means that there will be a fourth kingdom on earth (NET)
that will appear on the earth: The clause that will appear on the earth is literally “will be on the earth.” This indicates that this fourth kingdom would become powerful in the world of its time. Use the expression that is natural in your language. For example:
that will arise on earth
that will gain power in the world
that will come on the earth (NCV)
different from all the other kingdoms,
that will be different from the other three kingdoms.
It will not be like the previous three kingdoms.
different from all the other kingdoms: The Aramaic text indicates that this fourth kingdom will be different from the three kingdoms that the previous three beasts represented. The BSB has supplied the word other, and this may be helpful in many languages. Here are some other ways to translate this:
that will differ from all the other kingdoms (NET)
it will not be like the other three kingdoms
and it will devour the whole earth,
It will eat/swallow up the entire earth,
instead, conquering the whole world,
trample it down, and crush it.
breaking and crushing everything.
it will completely destroy it all.
and it will devour the whole earth, trample it down, and crush it: This verse part probably indicates some of the ways in which the fourth kingdom was different from the others. It will dominate and destroy the whole earth. Here are some other ways to translate this:
It will devour all the earth and trample and crush it (NET)
and it shall devour the whole earth, and trample it down, and break it to pieces (RSV)
will devour…trample…and crush: The Aramaic word that the BSB translates as will devour means “will eat, consume.” This is a figure of speech indicating that the beast will gain power over and destroy the earth. It has a similar meaning to the follow verbs, trample and crush. But the figures of speech are unclear or clashing. See also 7:7d and 7:19c-d. In these earlier verse parts the text indicates that the beast crushed the earth before devouring it and trampling on what was left. Here are some other ways to translate this:
will devour…trampling and crushing as it goes
It will devour…trampling and crushing everything in its path (NLT)
It will crush, devour, and trample on…

The person speaking is the one that Daniel approached in [Daniel 7:16](../07/16.md).

Alternate translation: “That person answered”

This does not mean the fourth kingdom will destroy the planet, but that it will brutally attack, conquer, and destroy all other kingdoms on earth.
7:1-28 This chapter contains a terrifying vision (7:2-14) and its interpretation (7:17-27). The sequence of kingdoms recalls Nebuchadnezzar’s dream some forty-five years earlier (2:1-45).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
