Section 7:1–28 Daniel dreamed about four beasts

Daniel had a vision of four beasts on earth and of God on his throne in heaven. One of the heavenly beings explained to Daniel that the four beasts represented four earthly kingdoms.

Paragraph 7:11–12

In Daniel’s vision, the fourth beast was killed and the other beasts lost their power.

7:11a

Then I kept watching because of the arrogant words the horn was speaking.

¶ I continued to watch because the horn continued to speak proud/arrogant words.
¶ The horn was still boasting, so I kept watching.

Then I kept watching because of the arrogant words the horn was speaking: The Aramaic text more literally says “then I was watching from the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking.” This probably indicates that Daniel kept on watching because he could hear the little horn boasting. Here are some other ways to translate this:

I continued to watch because I could hear the little horn’s boastful speech. (NLT)

I kept on looking because the little horn was bragging. (NCV)

the little horn was still boasting, so I continued to watch

7:11b

As I continued to watch, the beast was slain,

While I was watching, the fourth beast was put to death,
I watched as they killed the fourth creature

As I continued to watch, the beast was slain: The Aramaic sentence indicates that Daniel watched while the beast was slain. There is no implication that he then stopped watching. Here is another way to translate this:

And as I looked, the beast was slain. (RSV)

As I continued to watch: The Aramaic phrase that the BSB translates as I continued to watch is the same as that in 7:11a, “I kept watching.” In English it is more natural to have a variety of verb forms rather than exact repetition. Use a form that is natural in your language. For example:

And as I looked, (RSV)

I kept looking (NIV)

I went on watching (REB)

the beast was slain: This is a passive clause. There are two ways to translate it:

Using a passive verb. For example:
the beast was put to death (NRSV)
Using an active verb. The text does not say who killed the beast, whether it was God or his agents and servants. So you should try to leave this general. For example:
they killed the beast

the beast: The Aramaic word that the BSB translates as the beast refers to the fourth beast in the series, the one with the ten horns. In some languages it may be natural to make this explicit by saying

the fourth beast (GNT)

the fourth animal (NCV)

and its body was destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.

and its body was thrown in the burning/raging fire and destroyed.
and threw/put its body/carcass in a hot fire to destroy/burn it.

and its body was destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire: There are two passive verbs in this clause. The subject is unnamed but the same as in 7:11b, God or his agents. There are at least two ways to translate this verse part:

Using passive verbs. For example:
Its body was destroyed, and it was thrown into the burning fire. (NCV)
Its body was destroyed and put into a raging fire. (GW)
Using active verbs. For example:
they destroyed its body by throwing it into a blazing fire

its body: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as its body here refers to the dead body of the beast. Use a word that is appropriate for referring to an animals’ dead body. For example:

its carcass (REB)

thrown into: The Aramaic verb phrase that the BSB translates as thrown into is more literally “given to.”

General Comment on 7:11a

The dead body of the fourth beast was destroyed in the fire. So in some languages it may be natural to reverse the order of the two verb phrases. For example:

its body was thrown into the flames and destroyed (GNT)

Another possibility is to combine the two verbs:

its body was destroyed by fire (NLT)

its carcass was burnt
