OET (OET-LV)The seven mystery of_the stars, which you_saw on the right hand of_me, and the seven lampstands the golden:
the seven stars, seven the_messengers of_the assemblies are, and the seven lampstands the_seven assemblies are.

OET (OET-RV)This is the meaning of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lamp holders: The seven stars represent God’s messengers watching over those seven groups of believers, and the seven lamp holders represent those groups of believers.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:9–20: John introduced the revelation

In this section, John told the seven churches that he was exiled on the island of Patmos because he had preached about Jesus. The people in the seven churches had also suffered for the sake of Jesus. So John indicated that they all shared in that suffering. He explained where he was and why he was there. He then began to tell his vision of Jesus and what Jesus revealed to him.

Introduction to what God revealed to John

1:20a–d

This is the mystery…: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: The word This and the colon (:) at the end of 1:20b indicate that 1:20c–d describes the mystery in 1:20a–b. Some other ways to indicate this connection are:

20a–bThis is the secret meaning of the seven stars you saw in my right hand, and of the seven gold lamps: 20c–dthe seven stars are the angels of the seven churches… (REB)

20a–b I will explain the mystery of the seven stars that you saw at my right side and the seven gold lampstands. 20c–d The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches… (CEV)

20a–b Here is the secret of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and the seven golden lampstands: 20c–d The seven lampstands are the seven churches… (NCV)

1:20a

This is the mystery of the seven stars you saw in My right hand

mystery: The Greek word that the BSB translates as mystery refers to truth or knowledge that people have not discovered on their own. Someone else reveals it to them. John did not know the symbolic meaning of the seven stars and the seven lampstands, but Jesus told him in 1:20c–d. Other ways to translate this word are:

the secret meaning (GNT)

The hidden meaning (GW)

of the seven stars: Here the word of means “about” or “concerning.”

1:20b

and of the seven golden lampstands:

of the seven golden lampstands: Here the word of means “about” or “concerning.”

1:20c

The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches,

The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: This clause indicates that each star represented an angel. There was one angel for each church. Other ways to translate this clause are:

The seven stars represent the angels of the seven churches

The seven stars represent seven angels, one for each of the seven churches

the angels of the seven churches: Each angel has some kind of relationship with a church. Some scholars see the Greek word that the BSB translates as angel as representing the spiritual dimension of the church or its spiritual life. But Johnson (page 430) says this interpretation “lacks any supporting evidence in the NT…, especially…in Revelation.” It seems best to understand this word as an actual angel, like it is used in the rest of Revelation. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

the angels belonging to the seven churchesA translation of this example must not imply that the church somehow “owns” the angel.

the angels associated with the seven churches

angels: The Greek word that the BSB translates as angels can also be translated as “messengers.” It refers here to spirit beings who serve God. The English versions usually translate the Greek word as angels. See how you translated this word in 1:1.

1:20d

and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

and the seven lampstands are the seven churches: This clause indicates that each lampstand represents a church. In some languages a literal translation will not have that meaning. If that is true in your language, translate the correct meaning. For example:

the seven lampstands are symbolic of the seven churches

In this division, Jesus gave messages to John for seven churches. The churches were located in a province of the Roman empire that was called Asia. That region is now the southwest corner of the country of Turkey.

Each of these seven messages has an introduction, a main part, and a closing. The introductions describe Jesus with words similar to those found in chapter 1. The main parts describe what the churches were doing right and what they were doing wrong. The closings encourage the believers to repent of their sins and persevere in following Jesus. The verses for each part are:

Introduction

2:2a–6c

2:7a–e

(2)

In each message, Jesus spoke to the angel of the church. So he used singular verbs and pronouns. However, the angel represents the believers, and Jesus’ words refer to the deeds of the believers, not the deeds of the angel. So you may want to use plural verbs and pronouns in chapters 2–3 to refer to the believers.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

τὸ μυστήριον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Τό μυστήριον τῶν ἑπτά ἀστέρων οὕς εἶδες ἐπί τῆς δεξιάς μού καί τάς ἑπτά λυχνίας τάς χρυσᾶς οἱ ἑπτά ἀστέρες ἄγγελοι τῶν ἑπτά ἐκκλησιῶν εἰσίν καί αἱ λυχνίαι ἑπτά ἑπτά ἐκκλησίαι εἰσίν)

Jesus is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be helpful in your language. Alternate translation: [I will explain the mystery]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἄγγελοι τῶν ἑπτὰ ἐκκλησιῶν

˓the˒_angels ˱of˲_the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Τό μυστήριον τῶν ἑπτά ἀστέρων οὕς εἶδες ἐπί τῆς δεξιάς μού καί τάς ἑπτά λυχνίας τάς χρυσᾶς οἱ ἑπτά ἀστέρες ἄγγελοι τῶν ἑπτά ἐκκλησιῶν εἰσίν καί αἱ λυχνίαι ἑπτά ἑπτά ἐκκλησίαι εἰσίν)

In chapters 2 and 3, Jesus will dictate a letter to each of the angels of the seven churches as if those angels were the churches themselves. So in this vision in chapter 1, these angels, symbolized by the stars in Jesus’ right hand, seem to personify the churches. That is, the angels represent the churches as if the churches were people. These angels could be: (1) actual angels, that is, spiritual beings. Alternate translation: [angels who represent the seven churches] (2) leaders of the churches, whom Jesus is describing as angels. Alternate translation: [leaders of the seven churches] (3) messengers bringing news of the churches to John and carrying John’s letters back to the churches. Alternate translation: [messengers of the seven churches]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:20 John is to record what he sees because Revelation is an instructive word for the churches.
• The angels (or messengers; Greek angelos) of the seven churches could be (1) the guardian angels of these churches (cp. Matt 18:10; Acts 12:15); (2) the leading officials of the churches (cp. Matt 11:10, where “messenger” is angelos); or (3) a personification of the ethos of the church. The best understanding is probably a combination of 1 and 3.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
