uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὁ διάβολος, ὁ πλανῶν αὐτοὺς, ἐβλήθη

the devil the_‹one› deceiving them /was/_cast

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, the context suggests that it was God. Alternate translation: “God threw the devil who was deceiving them”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

τοῦ πυρὸς καὶ θείου

¬the ˱of˲_fire and ˱of˲_sulfur

This phrase expresses a single idea by using two words connected with and. The word fire describes the state of the sulfur. If it would be more natural in your language, you could express this meaning with an equivalent phrase that does not use “and.” Alternate translation: “of fiery sulfur”

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

αὐτοὺς

them

The pronoun them refers to the nations whom the devil deceived. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “the nations”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

βασανισθήσονται

˱they˲_/will_be_being/_tormented

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who will do the action, the context suggests that it will be God. Alternate translation: “God will torment them”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτὸς

˱by˲_day and night

John is using the two parts of a full day, day and night, to mean all the time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “all the time”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων

into for the ages ˱of˲_the ages

This expression refers to endless future time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “for all eternity”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

20:10 they will be tormented . . . forever: Rebellion against God has eternal consequences. While the concept of unending punishment repulses some, it is the message of Revelation and of Scripture generally that God will deal sternly with sin and rebellion by those who reject Christ’s saving work (see Matt 13:42; 25:41-46; John 3:18, 36; Rom 2:7). Perhaps more than any book in Scripture, Revelation illustrates that the unrepentant persist in their rebellion despite the consequences (Rev 9:20-21; 16:9-11; cp. Luke 16:31). Revelation also emphasizes that God is just and deals with sin as it deserves.

OET (OET-LV)And the devil, the one deceiving them, was_thrown into the lake of_ the _fire and of_sulfur, where were also the wild_animal and the false_prophet, and they_will_be_being_tormented by_day and night for the ages of_the ages.

OET (OET-RV) Then the devil who’d deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the animal and the false prophet were, and they’ll be tormented day and night throughout the ages.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
