SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 7:1–8: Angels put God’s seal on 144,000 people

In this section, John saw angels put God’s seal on 144,000 people from Israel. This seal indicates that these people belong to God.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The 144,000 of Israel Sealed (NRSV)

The 144,000 Are Marked for God (CEV)

7:5a–8c

All the tribes named here were named after the sons of Israel, except for Manasseh. Manasseh was a grandson of Israel. John used the name Manasseh instead of Dan, who was another son of Israel. He did so without explaining why.

7:5a

From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed,

From the tribe of Judah: This phrase refers to the clan that descended from Judah, one of the sons of Israel. The phrase is first in the clause to emphasize who this group of 12,000 men/people were.

12,000 were sealed: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

they sealed 12,000

the angels sealed 12,000

7:5b–8c

from the tribe of Reuben 12,000: The words “were sealed” are implied in each clause but not repeated. In some languages it is more natural to repeat those words. For example:

from the clan of Reuben, 12,000 were sealed

the angels sealed 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben

7:5b

from the tribe of Reuben 12,000,

7:5c

from the tribe of Gad 12,000,

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:1-17 Three interludes occur in chs 6–14 (ch 7; 10:1–11:14; 12:1–14:20) to define the place of God’s holy people and to provide perspective on the previous scenes. In this first interlude before the seventh seal is broken, two visions communicate how God protects his people and assures them of his calling.
