Section 10:5–15: Salvation for everyone is by faith not works

In this section Paul spoke about righteousness based on the Law of Moses and righteousness based on faith. The righteousness which comes from the Law is based on doing what the Law says. The righteousness which comes from faith is not based on what a person does but is instead a matter of the heart.

God rescues the person who believes in Jesus and announces that Jesus is his Lord. Paul said that this is true for both Jews and people who are not Jews. Jesus is Lord of all of them. and blesses them very much.

Paul then asked several questions for the believers in Rome to think about. He implied that someone must be sent and preach, and people must hear, believe, and call on Jesus. Paul ended the section with a quote from the Old Testament about how it is good to preach the good news.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

In some languages people prefer Old Testament quotes to be clearly introduced. For example:

This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

calls on the name of the Lord: The Greek word that the BSB translates as calls is in the middle voice, as in 10:12c. But here the help for which the people are calling is for God to save them. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

calls: The present tense here refers to any time. It does not indicate continuing action here.

the name of the Lord: The phrase the name of refers to the person and the kind of person he is. People know that the Lord can save, so they call on him. See the examples above.

the Lord: This is a quote from the Old Testament, so the Lord refers to God. Do not add “Jesus” or “Jesus Christ” (as implied information) here. Also, if possible, do not add “God” here either, because Paul implied that the Lord applies to Jesus in 10:14.
