The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites] or [commanded both the Cherethites and the Pelethites]

The Cherethites and the Pelethites were special groups of soldiers who served as David’s personal bodyguards and elite fighting force. If your readers would not be familiar with what these groups were, you could use the name of a similar thing that your readers would recognize, or you could use a more general term. Alternate translation: [the royal guard and special soldiers] or [the elite bodyguards and special military units]

David’s sons were from the tribe of Judah, not Levi, and so they could not serve as priests who offered sacrifices on the altar at the sacred tent. In this context, the author is probably using the term priests to mean high-ranking royal officials. The parallel passage in [1 Chronicles 18:17](../../1ch/18/17.md) says that they were “chief officials,” suggesting that that is the meaning here. Alternate translation: [and the sons of David were chief officials]

OET (OET-RV) Yehoyada’s son Benayah supervised the Keretites and the Peletites (David’s bodyguard), and David’s sons were his administrators.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
