one_thousand (Some words not found in UHB: and,he_captured Dāvid from=him/it one_thousand and=seven hundreds horsemen and=twenty thousand (a)_man foot_soldier and,he_hamstrung Dāvid DOM all/each/any/every the,chariotry and,he_left from=him/it hundred chariots )

The Septuagint (an ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible) and the parallel passage in [1 Chronicles 18:4](../../1ch/18/04.md) read “1,000 chariots and 7,000 horsemen.” That may have been the original reading. At one point in the process of transmission, scribes may have accidentally left out the word “chariots,” and the letters or points that indicated numbers may also have been unintentionally altered. If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

Here the term chariots represents the horses that pulled these chariots. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [And David hamstrung all of the chariot horses, but he left from them 100 horses]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-exceptions

וַיְעַקֵּ֤ר דָּוִד֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָרֶ֔כֶב וַיּוֹתֵ֥ר מִמֶּ֖נּוּ מֵ֥אָה רָֽכֶב

(Some words not found in UHB: and,he_captured Dāvid from=him/it one_thousand and=seven hundreds horsemen and=twenty thousand (a)_man foot_soldier and,he_hamstrung Dāvid DOM all/each/any/every the,chariotry and,he_left from=him/it hundred chariots )

If, in your language, it would appear that the author was making a statement here and then contradicting it, you could reverse the order of the clauses so that the exception is stated first and then the larger group is named second. Alternate translation: [And after choosing 100 horses from the chariots, David had his soldiers hamstring the rest]

Note 4 topic: translate-unknown

וַיְעַקֵּ֤ר דָּוִד֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָרֶ֔כֶב

(Some words not found in UHB: and,he_captured Dāvid from=him/it one_thousand and=seven hundreds horsemen and=twenty thousand (a)_man foot_soldier and,he_hamstrung Dāvid DOM all/each/any/every the,chariotry and,he_left from=him/it hundred chariots )

When the author says that David hamstrung these horses, he meant that he had his soldiers use a method of disabling them by cutting tendons in their legs. This would be done carefully so that horses would still be able to walk and carry loads, but they would no longer be able to run. As a result, they could no longer be used in warfare. If your readers would not be familiar with what hamstringing is, you could use a more general term. Alternate translation: [And David had his soldiers disable all of the chariot horses by cutting their leg tendons]
