The meaning of the word translated as shields is uncertain. It could be a general term for military equipment whose meaning must be understood from the context. In some contexts, such as [Jeremiah 51:11](../../jer/51/11.md), it seems to mean “quivers” or arrow-cases, and some versions also translate it that way here. However, the context seems to support the meaning of shields. Some ancient rulers had their bodyguard carry shields that were plated with precious metals, and Hadadezer may have done that. Alternate translation: [the gold-plated shields that Hadadezer’s bodyguard had carried]
