Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

18:1-24 This chapter contains seven poetic responses to the fall of Babylon (or Rome; see study note on 17:5).
In this section, three heavenly beings each announce something about Babylon. The first announcement is that the city is destroyed. Her riches and prosperity have been taken away.
The second announcement is that God’s people should leave Babylon before God destroys her. It also describes how kings and others mourn over the destroyed city.
The third announcement is that Babylon will never be built again.
Other examples of headings for this section are:
An angel announced that Babylon was destroyed, and some groups are sad
Announcements about the destruction of Babylon
Various people talk about Babylon
And: This Greek conjunction probably indicates that 18:24a–b continues telling more reasons why Babylon was destroyed. For example:
For (JPB)
there was found in her the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who had been slain on the earth: There are two ways to interpret who spoke these words:
The angel who began speaking in 18:21 continues speaking here. The ending quote mark occurs at the end of 18:24. (RSV, NIV, NJB, NASB, NABRE, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NCV, ESV)
The angel stopped speaking at 18:23 and John wrote his own thoughts here. The ending quote mark occurs at the end of 18:23. (BSB, GNT, REB)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).Aune (page 965) supports interpretation (1). And Beale (page 923) says, “The second hoti of v 23 does double duty and thus also introduces v 24.”
And there was found in her the blood of prophets and saints,
and in her the blood of prophets and of saints was found,
God has found her responsible for the blood/death of prophets, other of God’s people,
She was guilty for the deaths of prophets and other saints,
there was found in her the blood: In the Greek, the phrase in her is emphasized by being first in the clause. If possible, emphasize this phrase.
In some English versions, the verb phrase there was found occurs before the subject (blood). This is an English poetic style that also emphasizes the verb phrase. In the Greek, the verb is not emphasized. Other ways to translate this clause are:
The blood of prophets, God’s people, and everyone who had been murdered on earth was found in it (GW)
In your streets flowed the blood… (NLT)
This clause indicates that the city was responsible for killing prophets, saints, and all others who were killed. For example:
You are guilty of the death… (NCV)
This clause is passive. Some ways to translate it are:
Use a passive clause. For example:
In her was seen the blood
Use an active clause. For example:
God has found her responsible for the blood…
Use a verb that implies that God considered her to be responsible. For example:
She is guilty/responsible for the blood…
She is guilty of killing…
in her: The Greek uses the pronoun her to refer to Babylon. In 18:23a–d the angel used the second person pronoun “you.” In some languages it is more natural to continue using the second person. For example:
In you
Or you may have continued to use the pronoun “she” in 18:23a–d, based on how you translated 18:21c–d. If that is true, continue using “she/her” here. Also see note on 18:21c–24b.
of prophets and saints: The prophets are saints who have the gift of prophecy. For example:
prophets and other saints
prophets: A prophet is a person to whom God gives a message. The message may include a vision, as in Ezekiel 1 and Daniel 8. The message, called a prophecy, may reveal something about past events, current events, or future events. The prophet speaks God’s message to the people or writes it down for their use. See how you translated this word in 18:20.
saints: The Greek word that the BSB translates as saints means “holy ones.” It refers to all believers. See how you translated this word in 18:20.
and of all who had been slain on the earth.
even the blood of all who have been killed on the earth.”
and indeed responsible for all whom someone killed on the earth.”
even the deaths of all those people killed on the earth.”
all who had been slain on the earth: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:
all whom others have slain on the earth
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
εὑρέθη
˓was˒_found
Here the expression was found means “could be found” or “was there.” Alternate translation: [was]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἐν αὐτῇ αἷμα προφητῶν καὶ ἁγίων εὑρέθη
in her ˓the˒_blood ˱of˲_prophets (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐν αὐτῇ αἷμα προφητῶν καί ἁγίων εὑρέθη καί πάντων τῶν ἐσφαγμένων ἐπί τῆς γῆς)
The implication is that this blood is evidence that Babylon is guilty of killing the prophets and saints. You can provide this information in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [she was clearly guilty of killing prophets and saints]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole
πάντων τῶν ἐσφαγμένων ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς
˱of˲_all the_‹ones› ˓having_been˒_slain (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐν αὐτῇ αἷμα προφητῶν καί ἁγίων εὑρέθη καί πάντων τῶν ἐσφαγμένων ἐπί τῆς γῆς)
This could mean: (1) that the angel is saying all here as a generalization for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to express the emphasis. Alternate translation: [of ones having been slain throughout the earth] (2) that the angel is using a passive verbal form (See: next note) to refer to all the other ones, besides prophets and saints, whom Babylon slew. Alternate translation: [of all the other ones she slew on the earth]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
πάντων τῶν ἐσφαγμένων
˱of˲_all the_‹ones› ˓having_been˒_slain
If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [of all the ones she slew]
