TSNTyndale Study Notes:

16:1 A deacon (Greek diakonos, “servant”) refers both to a Christian who is recognized as a servant of Christ and specifically to someone who holds the office of deacon in a particular church (see Phil 1:1; 1 Tim 3:8-12; cp. Acts 6:1-6).
• Cenchrea was located about five miles from Corinth and functioned as its port. Paul might have been writing this letter to the Romans from Corinth on a winter-long stop there near the end of his third missionary journey (see Acts 20:2-3).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

συνίστημι

˱I˲_/am/_commending

The pronoun I here and throughout this chapter refers to Paul, except for 16:22. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [I, Paul, commend]

Note 2 topic: translate-names

Φοίβην

Phoebe

The word Phoebe is the name of a woman.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἡμῶν

˱of˲_us

In this verse and throughout this chapter our refers to Paul and his Christian readers, so our would be inclusive. Your language may require you to mark this form.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τὴν ἀδελφὴν

the sister

Paul speaks of Phoebe as if she were the physical sister of him and his Christian readers. He means she has a brother-sister relationship with all Christians because she trusts in Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [our spiritual sister]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

διάκονον

/a/_servant

See how you translated the abstract noun servant in 13:4.

Note 6 topic: translate-names

Κενχρεαῖς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: συνίστημι δὲ ὑμῖν Φοίβην τὴν ἀδελφὴν ἡμῶν οὖσαν καὶ διάκονον τῆς ἐκκλησίας τῆς ἐν Κεγχρεαῖς)

The word Cenchrea was the name of a city in Greece. See how Cenchrea is translated in Acts 18:18.
