3.1 Quid ergo amplius. Objicit sibi quod videt posse objici, ut solvat. Quandoquidem Judæus fit gentilis, et e converso. Ergo quid est plus Judæo, qui dicitur populus peculiaris Dei, quam gentili qui dicitur canis immundus? aut quid consecutus est de circumcisione? Ad hoc respondet: Valuit quidem olim, sed non ideo digniores sunt in fide, et hoc est: Multum est plus Judæo secundum priorem statum, quam gentili, et hoc per omnem modum. Omnis modus est vel in administratione temporalium, vel reseratione spiritualium in quo utroque multa Judæis Deus fecit, quæ non gentibus: et ita secundum priorem statum digniores fuerunt.


3.1 What therefore amplius. Obyicit sibi that videt posse obyici, as solvat. Quandoquidem Yudæus fit gentilis, and e converso. Ergo quid it_is plus Yudæo, who it_is_said populus peculiaris of_God, how gentili who it_is_said canis immundus? aut quid consecutus it_is about circumcisione? 3:1 what’s the advantage of being a Jew? Paul moves his argument along by raising questions. After preaching the Good News for over twenty years, he knew what questions people would ask when they heard a particular teaching. His emphasis on the equality of Jews and Gentiles before God (ch 2) inevitably led people to ask whether he was eliminating all Jewish privileges. The question-and-answer style follows the pattern of the diatribe (see study note on 2:1-5).

This verse contains two rhetorical questions connected by or. Paul is not asking for information, but here he is using these two questions to express the objections that a Jew might have to what Paul said in the previous chapter, especially what he said in 2:28–29. If you would not use a rhetorical question for this purpose in your language, you could translate his words as a statement or an exclamation and communicate the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [Then the Jew certainly has no advantage, and circumcision certainly has no benefit!]
