In this section Paul explained God’s plan for rescuing wrongdoers and making them right with himself. God did this by sending Jesus Christ to stand in the place of every wrongdoer and take the punishment that every wrongdoer deserves. So then, when a person believes in Jesus as the one who has taken the punishment on his behalf, God makes that person right with himself. In this way God remains true to his righteous character, for wrongdoing has been punished.
Since God did that, believers cannot boast in themselves. Paul also said that this faith in Jesus supports the law of Moses.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
Righteousness Through Faith (NIV)
How We Are Put Right with God (GNT)
God Gives Us His Approval as a Gift (GW)
God’s Way of Accepting People (CEV)
He did this to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time,
and to show his righteousness in these days,
Those things/deeds also occurred to show that he/God does what is right today.
He did this to demonstrate: The Greek is literally “for the display of.” It connects to “God presented Him as the atoning sacrifice” (3:25a). It introduces a second thing that God would show from that atonement. The first thing that God showed is told in 3:25c–d. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
and to demonstrate
he did it to demonstrate (NIV)
God also did that in order to show
You should translate this phrase in a similar way to how you translated “in order to demonstrate” in 3:25c.
His righteousness: This is the same Greek phrase as in 3:25c. It probably has the same meaning here. Translate it as you did in 3:25c.
at the present time: This phrase refers to the time that Paul wrote this. But it also refers generally to the time between Jesus ascending to heaven and his return. For example:
for the present age (NJB)
so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus.
in order that he is righteous/upright and that he declares people right/innocent when they believe in Jesus.
In that way God always does what is right and also says that people who believe in Jesus are right in his sight.
so as to: The words so as to introduces the purpose of God patiently waiting for Jesus to atone for people’s sins. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
in order to be

be just and to justify: The Greek words for be just and to justify have the same root, dikaio-.The Greek word that this TN interprets to be “justice” (BSB “righteousness”) in 3:25–26 also has the same root. Here it indicates that the two words have related meanings, to be just means “to do what is right” and to justify means “to be a person who makes people right with someone.” English is able to use two words with the same root as well, just-. If possible translate using similar words for both Greek words.
be just: Here this word means “to do what is right.” God always does the right deed. Here are other ways to translate this word:
is righteous (RSV)
always does what is right
is a just God (JBP)
is upright

to justify: The Greek is literally “the one putting right.” Here it means “declares people right before God.” When people believe in Jesus, God forgives them and considers them righteous. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
the one who puts right in his sight
he who makes right with himself
he declares righteous
The word “the one putting right” is the same word as “will be justified” in 3:20. See how you translated this word there.
the one who has faith in Jesus: The word faith means “to believe.” Some languages must use a verb for the meaning of faith. For example:
the one who believes in Jesus

ἐν
in
Here, in introduces a reason clause. Paul is giving the reason for God “overlooking of the sins that happened previously,” as stated in the previous verse. Starting a new sentence, use a natural way in your language to indicate a reason. Alternate translation: [The reason for this is]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
ἐν τῇ ἀνοχῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ
in the forbearance ¬the ˱of˲_God
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of forbearance, you could express the same idea with a different form. Alternate translation: [because God is so forbearing] or [since God forbears]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
ἐν τῇ ἀνοχῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ
in the forbearance ¬the ˱of˲_God
Paul is using the possessive form to describe God as being characterized by forbearance. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [in God’s forbearance]

Paul is speaking of all people who have faith in Jesus, not one particular person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a more natural phrase. Alternate translation: [anyone who is from faith in Jesus] or [every person who trusts in Jesus]
