MSG (21-24)But in our time something new has been added. What Moses and the prophets witnessed to all those years has happened. The God-setting-things-right that we read about has become Jesus-setting-things-right for us. And not only for us, but for everyone who believes in him. For there is no difference between us and them in this. Since we’ve compiled this long and sorry record as sinners (both us and them) and proved that we are utterly incapable of living the glorious lives God wills for us, God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ.

3:24 God, in his grace: God makes us right in his sight, not because he has to, but because he has freely chosen to give us his favor through Christ Jesus. Because we are helpless slaves of sin (3:9), our righteous status before God can never be earned (see 4:4-5).
• through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins (literally through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus): In Paul’s day, redemption referred to the price paid to free a slave. God paid our redemption price with the blood of his own Son to rescue us from our slavery to sin (see 3:9). This language was used in the Old Testament to refer to the Exodus, the first redemption of God’s people from bondage (see 2 Sam 7:23). God promised that he would again redeem his people (Hos 13:14; Mic 4:10).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification
δικαιούμενοι δωρεὰν τῇ αὐτοῦ χάριτι
/being/_justified undeservedly ˱by˲_the ˱of˲_him grace
Here Paul speaks of grace as if it were a person who could justify someone. Paul means that God graciously makes people righteous as a gift. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and are gifted with becoming righteous because God is gracious]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
δικαιούμενοι δωρεὰν
/being/_justified undeservedly
Paul assumes that his readers know that those who are being justified freely are “all” those who “have sinned” in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [all people are being freely justified]
δωρεὰν
undeservedly
Alternate translation: [as a gift] or [without payment]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
τῇ αὐτοῦ χάριτι, διὰ τῆς ἀπολυτρώσεως τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
˱by˲_the ˱of˲_him grace through the redemption ¬which in Christ Jesus
If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of grace and redemption, you could express the same ideas with different forms. Alternate translation: [by God being gracious through redeeming them in Christ Jesus] or [due to how kind God is, because Christ Jesus redeemed them]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἀπολυτρώσεως
redemption
The word translated as redemption refers to rescuing someone from captivity by paying a ransom. Your language may require you to indicate what the people are redeemed from. This could mean: (1) Jesus redeems people from eternal punishment. Alternate translation: [redemption from eternal punishment] (2) Jesus redeems people from being enslaved to sin. Alternate translation: [redemption from enslavement to sin]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
the ¬which in Christ Jesus
Here, Paul speaks of redemption as if it were an object that could be inside Jesus. Paul means that God redeemed all people who believe in Jesus by uniting them to Christ Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you can express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [that comes through union with Christ Jesus] or [that is through being united to Christ Jesus]
