17:2 Variant note: ו/אתי: (x-qere) ’וְ/אַ֤תְּ’: lemma_c/859 c morph_HC/Pp2fs id_07bTH וְ/אַ֤תְּ

OET (OET-RV)who admitted to his mother, “Those eleven hundred silver coins that were taken from you—when you made a curse, and even said it when I was listening, well listen, I’ve got it all—I took it myself.”
¶ His mother said, “May Yahweh bless you, my son.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-numbers

1,100 silver

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,mother,his thousand and,hundred the,pieces_of_silver which/who taken to/for=you(fs) and,you uttered_a_curse and=also spoke in/on/at/with,hearing,my see/lo/see! the,silver with,me I took,it and=she/it_said his/its=mother blessed son,my to/for=YHWH )

See how you translated the same number in 16:5.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

was taken from you

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,mother,his thousand and,hundred the,pieces_of_silver which/who taken to/for=you(fs) and,you uttered_a_curse and=also spoke in/on/at/with,hearing,my see/lo/see! the,silver with,me I took,it and=she/it_said his/its=mother blessed son,my to/for=YHWH )

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “someone took from you”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

and you swore

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,mother,his thousand and,hundred the,pieces_of_silver which/who taken to/for=you(fs) and,you uttered_a_curse and=also spoke in/on/at/with,hearing,my see/lo/see! the,silver with,me I took,it and=she/it_said his/its=mother blessed son,my to/for=YHWH )

Micah is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “and you swore a curse on whoever took it”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

and also you spoke in my ears

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,mother,his thousand and,hundred the,pieces_of_silver which/who taken to/for=you(fs) and,you uttered_a_curse and=also spoke in/on/at/with,hearing,my see/lo/see! the,silver with,me I took,it and=she/it_said his/its=mother blessed son,my to/for=YHWH )

Micah is using the term ears by association to mean that he heard what his mother said. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “and I also heard what you said”

Note 5 topic: translate-blessing

Blessed {be} my son by Yahweh

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,mother,his thousand and,hundred the,pieces_of_silver which/who taken to/for=you(fs) and,you uttered_a_curse and=also spoke in/on/at/with,hearing,my see/lo/see! the,silver with,me I took,it and=she/it_said his/its=mother blessed son,my to/for=YHWH )

The mother is speaking a blessing. She is saying something that she hopes will cause good and beneficial things to happen to her son. In your translation, use a form that people would recognize as a blessing in your language. You might express this as a prayer, if that would be more natural in your language. Alternate translation: “May Yahweh bless my son”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

Blessed {be} my son by Yahweh

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to,mother,his thousand and,hundred the,pieces_of_silver which/who taken to/for=you(fs) and,you uttered_a_curse and=also spoke in/on/at/with,hearing,my see/lo/see! the,silver with,me I took,it and=she/it_said his/its=mother blessed son,my to/for=YHWH )

The mother is speaking about her son in the third person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in the second person. Alternate translation: “May Yahweh bless you, my son”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

17:2-3 Micah’s mother was indulgent and idolatrous, yet she invoked the Lord’s name in both cursing and blessing.
• I heard you place a curse: The words uttered in curses and blessings were understood to have power, particularly if the speaker had the authority to utter such pronouncements (cp. Gen 27; Isa 55:11).
• 1,100 pieces: This same large number was given to Delilah (Judg 16:5). It was probably Micah’s mother’s life savings or dowry.
• The Lord bless you: Micah’s mother was hoping that the blessing would effectively neutralize her earlier curse.
