OET (OET-LV)And_this is_the_reason why he_circumcised Yəhōshūˊa all_of the_people which_had_come_out from_Miʦrayim/(Egypt) the_males all_of the_men_of (the)_war they_had_died in_wilderness on_way when_they_went_out from_Miʦrayim.

OET (OET-RV)(This was done because all the men who’d left Egypt and who were old enough to join the army had been circumcised but had died in the wilderness since then,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:2–12 Joshua circumcised the men, and the Israelites observed Passover

Joshua circumcised the Israelite men, because they had not done this ceremony while they walked through the wilderness for forty years. Then the Israelites observed the Passover ceremony. They ate food from the land of Canaan, and God stopped sending them manna.

Here are some other possible section headings:

Circumcision of the next generation

Circumcision and the first Passover in the promised land

5:4a

Now this is why Joshua circumcised them:

Now this is why Joshua circumcised them: The phrase this is why refers ahead to verses 5:5–7 and adds emphasis. Choose a word or phrase that naturally indicates emphasis in your language. For example:

Joshua had to circumcise them because (NLT)

this is why it was necessary to circumcise them

5:4b

All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of war—

All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of war: The two phrases All those who came out of Egypt and all the men of war refer to the same group of people and can be translated by one phrase. For example:

all the men old enough to serve in the army (NCV)

all the soldiers (GW)

all the men of military age (NIV)

who came out of Egypt: Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

After the Israelites left Egypt, all the men old enough to serve in the army (NCV)

All the men who were old enough to fight in battle when they left Egypt (NLT)

5:4c

had died on the journey in the wilderness after they had left Egypt.

had died on the journey in the wilderness: The clause had died on the journey in the wilderness indicates that the men old enough to fight died while they walked through the wilderness.

after they had left Egypt: It may be redundant to translate this phrase in some languages because this information is already included in 5:4b.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / go

הַיֹּצֵא֩ & בְּצֵאתָ֖ם

[which]_had,come_out & when,they,went_out

In a context such as this, your language may say “having gone” and “in their going out” rather than having come and in their coming out. Use whichever is more natural, here and in the next two verses.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

5:4-7 This unexpected detour in the narrative provides an important reminder of Israel’s earlier refusal to believe that God would bring them safely into the land of Canaan (Num 14). This summary of God’s judgment upon their fathers reminded the present generation that trusting in God was still necessary if they were to occupy the land their ancestors had forfeited. Further, it signaled the completion of God’s judgment upon the earlier generation.
