Some ancient manuscripts read “And he saw.” The ULT follows that reading. Other ancient manuscripts read “And he was afraid.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

The author is speaking as if Elijah actually saw something. He means that Elijah realized something. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [And he saw how things stood] or [And he realized what would happen if he stayed in Israel]

The author is using went for his life as a common expression of his culture to mean “fled to save his life” or “ran away to avoid being killed.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and ran for his life] or [and fled for safety]

He is specifying that Beersheba was within the kingdom of Judah, not within Jezebel’s kingdom of Israel, to help readers understand that Elijah knew his servant would be safe if he left him there. In your translation, introduce this information in a way that would be natural in your own language and culture.
