OET (OET-LV) And_they_will_bring_back to heart_of_their on_the_earth where they_have_been_taken_captive there and_they_will_repent and_they_will_seek_favour to_you in_land of_their_captors to_say we_have_sinned and_we_have_done_wrong we_have_acted_wickedly.
OET (OET-RV) and then they have a change of mind in the land where they were taken to as captives, and while they’re still living in that land, they turn back and beg for your favour and confess, ‘We’ve disobeyed and done wrong—we’ve behaved wickedly,’

וְהֵשִׁ֨יבוּ֙ אֶל־לִבָּ֔ם
(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_bring_back to/towards heart_of,their on_the=earth which/who taken_captive there and,they_will_repent and,they_will_seek_favor to,you in=land of,their_captors to=say sinned and,we_have_done_wrong acted_wickedly )
Here, the heart represents a person’s thoughts and understanding. Solomon is speaking of the exiled people becoming aware of their situation as if they were bringing something back to their heart. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and they recall]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
וְהֵשִׁ֨יבוּ֙ אֶל־לִבָּ֔ם
(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_bring_back to/towards heart_of,their on_the=earth which/who taken_captive there and,they_will_repent and,they_will_seek_favor to,you in=land of,their_captors to=say sinned and,we_have_done_wrong acted_wickedly )
Solomon is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context in to [Deuteronomy 30:1](../deu/30/01.md), to which Solomon is alluding here, if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [and they recall your warning that exile would be the punishment for disobedience]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo
בָּאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִשְׁבּוּ־שָׁ֑ם וְשָׁ֣בוּ ׀ וְהִֽתְחַנְּנ֣וּ אֵלֶ֗יךָ בְּאֶ֤רֶץ שֹֽׁבֵיהֶם֙
It might seem that saying where and there and repeating in the land would be to convey extra information that would not be natural to express in your language. If so, you could shorten this. Alternate translation: [in the land where they have been taken captive, and they turn back and supplicate to you there]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִשְׁבּוּ־שָׁ֑ם
(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_bring_back to/towards heart_of,their on_the=earth which/who taken_captive there and,they_will_repent and,they_will_seek_favor to,you in=land of,their_captors to=say sinned and,we_have_done_wrong acted_wickedly )
The expression have been taken captive is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [to which their enemies have taken them captive]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְשָׁ֣בוּ
(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_bring_back to/towards heart_of,their on_the=earth which/who taken_captive there and,they_will_repent and,they_will_seek_favor to,you in=land of,their_captors to=say sinned and,we_have_done_wrong acted_wickedly )
See how you translated the similar expression in [8:33](../08/33.md). Alternate translation: [and they repent]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes
לֵאמֹ֔ר חָטָ֥אנוּ וְהֶעֱוִ֖ינוּ רָשָֽׁעְנוּ
to=say sinned and,we_have_done_wrong (Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_bring_back to/towards heart_of,their on_the=earth which/who taken_captive there and,they_will_repent and,they_will_seek_favor to,you in=land of,their_captors to=say sinned and,we_have_done_wrong acted_wickedly )
If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [saying that they have sinned and done iniquity, that they have acted wickedly]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet
חָטָ֥אנוּ וְהֶעֱוִ֖ינוּ רָשָֽׁעְנוּ
sinned and,we_have_done_wrong (Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_bring_back to/towards heart_of,their on_the=earth which/who taken_captive there and,they_will_repent and,they_will_seek_favor to,you in=land of,their_captors to=say sinned and,we_have_done_wrong acted_wickedly )
The expressions sinned, done iniquity, and acted wickedly mean similar things. The people are using these expressions together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [We have committed many very serious sins]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
