OET (OET-RV)and they return to you with all their hearts and all their souls in the land of their enemies where they were taken captive, and they pray to you toward the direction of their country which you gave to their fathers, the city that you chose, and the residence that I’ve built for your honour,

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hypo

Suppose that they return … suppose that they pray

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_return to,you in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their in=land their_enemies_of,of which/who took_~_captive DOM=them and,they_will_pray to,you road/way_of their_land_of,of which/who you(ms)_put to,their_of,ancestors the=city which/who chosen and,the,house which/who built for,your_of,name )

When Solomon was speaking, these hypothetical situations had not happened, but Solomon knew that they might happen in the future. Use the form in your language for talking about events that have not happened but might happen in the future.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

with all their heart and with all their soul

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_return to,you in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their in=land their_enemies_of,of which/who took_~_captive DOM=them and,they_will_pray to,you road/way_of their_land_of,of which/who you(ms)_put to,their_of,ancestors the=city which/who chosen and,the,house which/who built for,your_of,name )

The idiom “with all … heart” means “completely” and “with all … soul” means “with all … being.” These two phrases have similar meanings. See how you translated this in [1 Kings 2:4](../02/04.md). Alternate translation: “with all their being” or “with all their energy” (See also: figs-doublet)

in the land

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_return to,you in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their in=land their_enemies_of,of which/who took_~_captive DOM=them and,they_will_pray to,you road/way_of their_land_of,of which/who you(ms)_put to,their_of,ancestors the=city which/who chosen and,the,house which/who built for,your_of,name )

Alternate translation: “while they are living in the land”

toward their land

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_return to,you in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their in=land their_enemies_of,of which/who took_~_captive DOM=them and,they_will_pray to,you road/way_of their_land_of,of which/who you(ms)_put to,their_of,ancestors the=city which/who chosen and,the,house which/who built for,your_of,name )

“toward the land in which they belong.” This refers to Israel.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

for your name

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they_will_return to,you in=all heart_of,their and=on/over=all being_of,their in=land their_enemies_of,of which/who took_~_captive DOM=them and,they_will_pray to,you road/way_of their_land_of,of which/who you(ms)_put to,their_of,ancestors the=city which/who chosen and,the,house which/who built for,your_of,name )

The word “name” is a metonym for the person, and “for … name” refers to worshiping the person. See how you translated similar words in [1 Kings 3:2](../03/02.md). Alternate translation: “in which people will worship you”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:1-66 Solomon’s building activities climaxed with the Ark’s move to the newly erected Temple. The king offered both prayer (8:22-53) and words of praise and blessing (8:56-61) to dedicate the Temple for the Lord’s service. After the dedication, the assembled gathering enjoyed the great Festival of Shelters. The focus of the account is on Solomon praising God and blessing the people (8:12-61).

OET (OET-RV)and they return to you with all their hearts and all their souls in the land of their enemies where they were taken captive, and they pray to you toward the direction of their country which you gave to their fathers, the city that you chose, and the residence that I’ve built for your honour,

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.OET logo mark
