In this context, this expression indicates that Solomon turned around again and faced the altar of burnt offerings that was in the temple court. (While he was in front of the crowd of Israelites from their perspective, from his perspective, they were behind him.) Alternate translation: [facing]

Based on what the author says in [8:54](../08/54.md), that Solomon got up “from bowing on his knees with his palms spread out toward the heavens,” the author means implicitly here that when Solomon assumed a posture of prayer by raising his hands, he also knelt down. The parallel passage in [2 Chronicles 6:13](../2ch/06/13.md) states this specifically. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [And he knelt down and spread out his palms to the heavens]
