OET (OET-RV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

יָסִ֗יר

remove

As in [4:20](../04/20.md), here, he refers to the individual offering the sacrifice, not to the priest. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [the person offering the sin offering shall remove]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר הוּסַ֣ר חֵלֶב֮

just=as removed fat

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [just as a person would remove the fat]

Note 3 topic: translate-tense

כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר הוּסַ֣ר חֵלֶב֮ מֵעַ֣ל זֶ֣בַח הַשְּׁלָמִים֒

just=as removed fat from=under sacrifice_of the,fellowship

As in [4:10](../04/10.md), the author of Leviticus does not use the present tense here to describe contemporaneous or ongoing action, as if he were here referring to a specific instance where an individual was preparing a peace offering. Rather, the present tense is being used both to describe an action that was previously described in the book of Leviticus and to depict a hypothetical situation. If it would be helpful in your language, consider choosing language that makes it plain that the author is not referring to specific past actions. Alternate translation: [in the same manner as the fat would be removed from the sacrifice of the peace offerings]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

וְכִפֶּ֥ר עָלָ֛יו הַכֹּהֵ֖ן

and,make_atonement on/upon/above=him/it the=priest/officer

See how you handled this expression involving an abstract noun in [1:4](../01/04.md) and [4:20](../04/20.md).

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְנִסְלַ֥ח לֽוֹ

and,forgiven to=him/it

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [and Yahweh will forgive his sin]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:22-35 The sin offerings described in this passage atoned for laypersons, whether leaders or other Israelite citizens. These offerings could be eaten (contrast 4:3-21), and they involved lesser animals. The blood of the offering was disposed of in the courtyard of the Tabernacle and not carried to the Holy Place. As with the peace offering (ch 3), the fat and certain internal organs were burned on the altar. However, the rest of the meat from these offerings was given to the priest as food for himself and the males in his family (6:29), and it was to be eaten in a holy place (6:26; cp. 10:16-20). A lay leader was to offer a male goat (4:23), while a common layperson could offer a female goat or lamb. The animal’s lesser size and cost reflected the lesser influence of the common Israelite and, probably, their financial situation. Economic considerations allowed those who were poor to bring a pair of doves or young pigeons (5:7-8; 12:6, 8; cp. Luke 2:24). The desperately poor could offer two quarts of flour (Lev 5:11).
