OET (OET-LV)and that not someone may_be_able to_buy or to_sell, except not/lest the one having the mark, the name of_the wild_animal, or the number of_the name of_it.

OET (OET-RV)Then the land creature ordered that no one could buy or sell anything if they don’t have that mark. The mark was the name of the sea creature or the number that stood for its name.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 13:11–18: The second beast rose from the earth

In this section, John saw another beast. This beast rose from the earth. He also had Satan’s authority, as did the first beast. He forced people to worship the first beast. He did miracles and deceived people. He also forced people to have a mark put on their hand or their forehead.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The beast from the earth

The false prophet that forced people to take the mark of the first beast

13:17a

so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark—

13:17b

the name of the beast or the number of its name.

13:17a–b

the name of the beast or the number of its name: There is a textual issue in 13:17b: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the text the name of the beast or the number of his name. These words explain “the mark” in 13:17a (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some, mostly later Greek manuscripts have the text or the name of the beast or the number of his name (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. The BSB uses a long dash after 13:17a to indicate that 13:17b explains that the mark was the beast’s name or the number of its name. In some languages a literal translation would wrongly indicate that there are other marks that John was thinking of and only this one was the beast’s name or the number of its name. If that is true in your language, translate this clause so that it tells more about this mark. One way to do that is to start a new sentence here. For example:

It is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

the name of the beast: This phrase refers to name of the first beast.

the number of its name: There are many ways to interpret this phrase. Some possibilities are:

  1. It indicates that the number in 13:18d is strictly symbolic. For example, three sixes may refer to three beings, namely, the dragon and the two beasts. They always fall short of God and perfection, often represented by the number seven.Beale (page 722–725) and others explore this.

  2. Add up the numbers of the beast’s name based on a numbering system using the Greek or Hebrew alphabet. The total would be 666.Aune (page 770) and others explore this.

  3. Each number represents a Greek letter (“Α” = 1, “Β” = 2, and so forth). One possible solution for “666” would be “ZZZ” in the Greek alphabet. This would be the initials of the beast’s name.Swete (page 175) speaks of a large number of conjectures.

You should translate this phrase so that it allows these interpretations. For example:

the number that stands for the name (GNT)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὸν ἀριθμὸν τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί ἵνα μή τὶς δύνηται ἀγοράσαι ἤ πωλῆσαι εἰ μή ὁ ἔχων τό χάραγμα τό ὄνομα τοῦ θηρίου ἤ τόν ἀριθμόν τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ)

In this culture, people used the letters of the alphabet as symbols for numbers as well. As a result, it was possible to add up the values of the letters in someone’s name to get the number of that name. That is what John means implicitly here. If your readers would not be familiar with this practice, you could explain it in your translation. Alternate translation: [the sum of the numerical values of the letters in its name]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

13:11-18 another beast: This second beast, the third member of the evil trinity (see study note on 12:18–13:18), is later called the “false prophet” (16:13). As a high priest of false religion, he leads the world into worshiping the first beast and the dragon (see also 16:13-14).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
