OET (OET-LV) And it_is_performing signs great, that even fire it_may_be_making out_of the sky to_be_coming_down to the earth before the people.
OET (OET-RV) The land animal also did amazing miracles and it even caused fire to fall from the sky down to the earth that people could see.
In this section, John saw another beast. This beast rose from the earth. He also had Satan’s authority, as did the first beast. He forced people to worship the first beast. He did miracles and deceived people. He also forced people to have a mark put on their hand or their forehead.
Other examples of headings for this section are:
The beast from the earth
The false prophet that forced people to take the mark of the first beast
And the second beast performed great signs
He did great miracles indicating his power,
And the second monster worked great wonders showing his power,
performed: This word means “did” here. For example:
worked (NJB)
The beast probably did miracles throughout the 42 months. Translate the word so that it indicates “always doing so” rather than “doing this once.”
great signs: The BSB literally represents the Greek here. The word sign here refers to an unusual event that people regard as having a special meaning. These signs were probably miracles that showed the great power of the dragon and the two beasts. Other ways to translate the Greek phrase are:
great miracles (NJB)
great portents
great wonders (KJV)
The Greek phrase here is the same as in 12:1a. In that verse the BSB has “a great sign.” However, the phrase here is plural. The meaning here probably implies miracles as signs, rather than just signs that are seen.
to cause even fire from heaven to come down to earth
even, for example, causing fire to descend from very high in the sky to earth
including the amazing miracle of causing fire to descend from very high in the sky,
to cause even fire from heaven to come down: The word even indicates that to cause…fire from heaven to come down is an example of the great signs (13:13a). For example:
even, for example, causing fire to come down
including the amazing miracle of causing fire to descend
For example, he caused fire to descend
from heaven…to earth: Here the word heaven means “very high in the sky.” The fire probably began so high in the sky that the people could not see where it began. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
to earth from the sky (NLT)
from very high in the sky
in the presence of the people.
before people.
and many people saw them.
in the presence of the people: The Greek phrase is literally “before men.” This event was done purposely so people could see it. Other ways to translate this phrase are:
in the sight of everyone (GNT)
while people are watching (NCV)
the people: This word is general and refers to both men and women.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
σημεῖα
signs
John is not using the word signs here and in the next verse to mean the same thing that he does when he speaks of signs in [12:1](../12/01.md) and [12:3](../12/03.md). Here he does not mean significant sights, but miracles. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [miracles]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀνθρώπων
before the people
The term before here means “in front of.” Alternate translation: [in front of men] or [where men could see them]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations
τῶν ἀνθρώπων
the people
Although the term man is masculine, John is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use a term in your language that is clearly inclusive of both men and women. Alternate translation: [people]
13:11-18 another beast: This second beast, the third member of the evil trinity (see study note on 12:18–13:18), is later called the “false prophet” (16:13). As a high priest of false religion, he leads the world into worshiping the first beast and the dragon (see also 16:13-14).
OET (OET-LV) And it_is_performing signs great, that even fire it_may_be_making out_of the sky to_be_coming_down to the earth before the people.
OET (OET-RV) The land animal also did amazing miracles and it even caused fire to fall from the sky down to the earth that people could see.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
