SOTN SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 16:1–24: Paul gave some final instructions

In this final section of the book, Paul wrote briefly about several topics. He wrote about collecting money for poor Christians in Jerusalem, and he wrote about the travel plans of him and his companions. Then he concluded his letter with some short exhortations, warnings, blessings, and greetings.

Here are some other possible section headings:

The conclusion of the letter

Final topics

Paragraph 16:19–20

In this paragraph Paul gave greetings from three groups of people in Asia. Consider the forms that are natural in your language for sending greetings in a letter.

16:20a

All the brothers here send you greetings.

All the brothers here send you greetings: All the believers in Ephesus sent their greetings to the believers in Corinth.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

All of the Lord’s followers send their greetings. (CEV)

All the Christians here send greetings. (JBP)

16:20b

Greet one another with a holy kiss.

Greet one another: In verse 16:19 “greet” referred to sending a message to people far away. In this verse, the greeting is given to someone who is present. Choose the appropriate word in your language for each context.

with a holy kiss: In the early church, believers often greeted one another by kissing on the cheek. Paul used the word holy because this method of greeting was used by God’s people. In some cultures it may not be acceptable for unmarried adults to kiss. There are several ways to translate the term holy kiss:

UTN uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οἱ ἀδελφοὶ πάντες

the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀσπάζονται ὑμᾶς οἱ ἀδελφοί πάντες Ἀσπάσασθε ἀλλήλους ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ)

Here, All the brothers refers to fellow believers. They could be: (1) everyone in Ephesus (where Paul is) who wishes to say hello to the believers in Corinth. Alternate translation: [All the brothers here]; (2) the believers who travel and work with Paul. Alternate translation: [All the brothers who work with me]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

οἱ ἀδελφοὶ

the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀσπάζονται ὑμᾶς οἱ ἀδελφοί πάντες Ἀσπάσασθε ἀλλήλους ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ)

Although brothers is in masculine form, Paul is using it to refer to any believer, whether man or woman. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express brothers with a non gendered word or refer to both genders. Alternate translation: [the brothers and sisters]

Note 3 topic: translate-blessing

ἀσπάζονται

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀσπάζονται ὑμᾶς οἱ ἀδελφοί πάντες Ἀσπάσασθε ἀλλήλους ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ)

Here Paul continues to extend greetings from people who are with him. Translate greet as you did in [16:19](../16/19.md). Alternate translation: [ask to be remembered to] or [send regards to]

Note 4 topic: translate-blessing

ἀσπάσασθε ἀλλήλους

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀσπάζονται ὑμᾶς οἱ ἀδελφοί πάντες Ἀσπάσασθε ἀλλήλους ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ)

Since this letter would be read in public to the Corinthian believers, Paul wishes them to Greet each other in this situation. If possible, translate Greet as you did earlier in the verse. If you must translate it differently, use a word or phrase for “greeting” other people who are meeting together. Alternate translation: [Say hello to one another] or [Receive one another]

Note 5 topic: translate-unknown

ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ

with ˓a˒_kiss holy

Here, a holy kiss describes a kiss that believers would give to other believers (that is why it is holy). In Paul’s culture, this was an appropriate way to greet someone with whom one was very close, such as a family member or a good friend. You could use a greeting that is used by close friends or family members and clarify that here it is used in a holy or Christian way. Alternate translation: [with a Christian hug] or [in warm way that is appropriate for fellow believers]
