11:2–12:7 The messenger provided a grand sweep of history, from the time of Persia, through the break-up of Greece, the rise and defeat of a wicked king or series of kings (11:21-45), and the final resurrection and triumph of God’s people.
11:2 Three more Persian kings: These Persian kings who followed Cyrus II were most likely Cambyses (530–522 BC), Gaumata (522 BC, a usurper), and Darius I (521–486 BC). The fourth was probably Xerxes I (486–465 BC; see study note on Esth 1:1), whose riches were legendary, as were his army of 1,700,000 soldiers and his huge navy (see Herodotus, Histories 7.6), which he used to fight against the kingdom of Greece. He was unsuccessful, as the Persians failed to defeat the growing power of Greece. God’s sovereign hand was at work behind the historical events of this chapter.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
The angelic figure who looked like a human being continued to talk to Daniel. It may be helpful to make this explicit, as the GW has done:
The person who looked like a human continued, “What I am about to tell you is the truth…. (GW)
Now then, I will tell you the truth:
¶ “I am speaking the truth to you(sing).
¶ “Daniel, I am going to tell you what will certainly happen.
Now then: The Hebrew compound word that the BSB translates as Now then here introduces something that the angelic figure was about to do. He was about to tell Daniel the truth. It is important to avoid indicating that what he was about to do was in contrast to what he was doing before. He had not been lying to Daniel up to this point. He had not previously been telling Daniel things that were not true. In order to avoid this implication, some English translations do not explicitly translate this conjunction. Introduce what the angel next said to Daniel in a way that is natural in your language.
I will tell you the truth: The Hebrew clause that the BSB translates as I will tell you the truth emphasizes that what the angel was about to tell Daniel was true and therefore important to hear. Here are some other ways to translate this:
I will announce the truth to you. (NRSV)
What I am about to tell you is the truth. (GW)
What I am going to tell you is certain to happen. (CEV)
Three more kings will arise in Persia,
There will be three more kings in Persia.
After Cyrus three kings will rule over Persia, one after another.
Three more kings will arise in Persia: This clause indicates that after Darius three kings would rule Persia, one after the other. Here are some other ways to translate this:
Three more kings will rule Persia. (GW)
Three more Persian kings will reign. (NLT)
and then a fourth, who will be far richer than all the others.
Then a fourth king will reign/rule. He will have more wealth than any of the previous kings of Persia.
Then there will be/appear a fourth king. He will gain more riches than any of his predecessors.
and then a fourth: The phrase and then a fourth is a short way of saying “and then a fourth king will arise in Persia.” Here are some other ways to translate this:
Then there will be a fourth (GW)
and then a fourth king will come (NCV)
who will be far richer than all the others: The Hebrew more literally says, “and he will enrich himself with great riches, more than everyone.” The word others probably refers to the previous kings of Persia. Here are some other ways to translate this:
will become much richer than all the others (GW)
He will be much richer than all the kings of Persia before him (NCV)
By the power of his wealth,
Through/By his riches he will become powerful.
He will use his wealth to gain power.
By the power of his wealth: The Hebrew text says “according to his power by his wealth.” Many English translations understand this to mean that this king will become powerful by using his wealth. The important point is that this king will gain a lot of power as well as a lot of wealth. Here are some other ways to translate this:
He…will use his riches to get power. (NCV)
when by his wealth he has extended his power (REB)
In some languages it may be natural to translate the noun power with an adjective meaning “powerful, strong.” For example:
As he becomes strong through his wealth (GW)
This king will use his riches to become very powerful.
his wealth will make him so powerful that… (CEV)
he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece.
He will arouse/encourage everyone to oppose the kingdom of Javan/Greece.
He will cause all the people to oppose the kingdom of Greece.
he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece: This clause probably indicates that this fourth king will rouse many people to fight against the kingdom of Greece. Here are some other ways to translate this:
he will turn everyone against the kingdom of Greece (GW)
stir up everyone to fight against the kingdom of Greece (NLT)
the kingdom of Greece: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as the kingdom of Greece is literally “the kingdom of Javan.” Javan referred to the land that is now Greece. See how you translated this name in 8:21a and 10:20c.
