MSG (1-8)“Darius, son of Ahasuerus, born a Mede, became king over the land of Babylon. In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, was meditating on the Scriptures that gave, according to the Word of God to the prophet Jeremiah, the number of years that Jerusalem had to lie in ruins, namely, seventy. I turned to the Master God, asking for an answer—praying earnestly, fasting from meals, wearing rough penitential burlap, and kneeling in the ashes. I poured out my heart, baring my soul to God, my God:

9:4 Daniel's prayer draws on a number of texts from the Old Testament (Deuteronomy, 1 Kings, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Jeremiah) and so switches between me/our, you/your, and he/his. For consistency here the pronouns are regularized e.g. all references to God are designated as “you.”

9:4 the Lord (Hebrew Yahweh): The covenant name of God (Exod 6:2-3; 20:2) is found in Daniel only in this chapter.
• God is faithful to his covenant with his people who love . . . and obey him (cp. Exod 34:6-7; Deut 7:9; Rom 8:28). God’s unfailing love (Hebrew khesed, elsewhere translated “grace,” “mercy,” “kindness”) is his fundamental nature that is the cause of faith, hope, and worship throughout the Bible (see Num 14:18; Neh 9:17; Pss 108:4; 136:1-26; Jon 2:4; 1 Jn 4:7-8).
The vision recorded in this chapter occurred during the first year of the reign of Darius (538 B.C.). Thirteen years had therefore passed since Daniel received the vision described in chapter 8. Daniel was now more than eighty years old.
Daniel had read in the book of Jeremiah that God’s people would remain in exile and serve the king of Babylon for seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11). During that time the city of Jerusalem would remain in ruins. However, God had promised to bring his people back to the land of Judah after the seventy years were over (Jeremiah 29:10). Now Daniel realized that the seventy-year period was almost at an end. He prayed for his people and for Jerusalem. In response, God sent the angel Gabriel to reveal what would happen in the future.
Daniel confessed to God the sin of his people, the people of Israel.
And I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed,
¶ As I prayed to Yahweh my God, I confessed to him the sins of my people. I said,
¶ I admitted to Yahweh my God that we(excl) had sinned. I prayed/said,
And I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed: The Hebrew verbs that the BSB translates as prayed and confessed refer to the same action, that of speaking to God in sorrow for sin. The confession was the content of the prayer. The sins that Daniel confessed were the common sins of the people of Israel. Other ways to translate this include:
I prayed to Yahweh my God. I admitted to him the sins of my people.
I prayed to the Lord my God, confessing in this way: (NET)
“O, Lord, the great and awesome God,
“Lord, you are the great and awesome God.
“Our(excl) Master, you are the great God, the God who is/deserves to be feared.
O, Lord, the great and awesome God: Daniel praised God by describing him as great and awesome. The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as awesome describes God as so great and holy that he is worthy of fear and respect. Other ways to translate this include:
O Lord, you are a great and awesome God! (NLT)
Our Lord, you are a great and fearsome God (CEV)
However, it is important to avoid implying that there are many gods and that the Lord is one of the great and awesome ones. In some languages it may be necessary to avoid this wrong meaning by translating this phrase as one or two separate clauses. For example:
Lord God, you are great, and we honor you. (GNT)
who keeps His covenant of loving devotion to those who love Him and keep His commandments,
You(sing) are faithful to your covenant and to those who love you and obey your commandments.
You are loyal to the solemn agreement you made with us. You are loyal to your loving and obedient people.
who keeps His covenant of loving devotion: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as keeps His covenant of loving devotion is more literally “keeps the covenant and the love.” The covenant and the “love” form one idea. They are not two separate things that God kept. Rather, God showed his love for his people by remaining faithful to the covenant that he had made with them. God’s covenant promise was to be loving and faithful to his people, and he had kept that promise.
Other ways to translate this include:
You are faithful to your covenant and show constant love (GNT)
you keep the covenant and show faithful love (NJB)
You are faithful to your covenant. You always act in love….
covenant: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as covenant in this context refers to God’s solemn agreement with his people Israel. See KBT “covenant” and see how you translated this in Deuteronomy 7:9, 1 Kings 8:23, Luke 1:72–73, Acts 3:25, and Hebrews 8:8–10.
loving devotion: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as loving devotion has a broad range of meanings, all positive. In this case it refers to God’s loyalty and faithfulness to his people.
to those who love Him and keep His commandments: This phrase describes the people to whom God shows his faithful love. In your translation, be sure to make it clear that this refers to one group of people with two characteristics, and not to two different groups. Other ways to translate this include:
with those who love him, those who keep/obey his commandments
with those who love and obey you (CEV)
to those who love you and do what you command (GNT)
